Special Requirements:

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: The City of Lansing reserves the right to utilize equivalencies where deemed appropriate with regard to education and experience requirements.
- Associate’s Degree in marketing, journalism, public relations, communications or related field; Bachelor’s Degree preferred
- One (1) year of experience in marketing and communications
- Experience in government communications preferred
- Experience with technical writing preferred
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILIITIES REQUIREMENTS:
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of public relations
- Skill in writing letters and promotional material
- Skill in maintaining records and files
- Skills in customer service and event management
- Ability to use a personal computer and office equipment
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, other City employees, volunteer boards and with the public
- Must be dependable and possess a good work record
- Skill in the use of graphic design software such as Publisher, InDesign, Canva, Photoshop, etc. preferred
- Skill in the use of video editing software such as Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere, Lightworks, or iMovie, etc. preferred

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS OF POSITION:

ESSENTIAL POSITION FUNCTIONS:
- Plans, develops, implements and advises department on a comprehensive and innovative public relations, communications, and promotion program aimed at increasing awareness, current and future construction, and other department activities.
- Manages the development, distribution and inventory of major departmental publications, brochures and related materials.
- Manages and coordinates media relations.
- Manages and coordinates submittal of articles and advertisements for communication and marketing initiatives.
- Plans, coordinates and assists with leading citizen engagement and community meetings; prepares presentations for public meetings, press conferences, community meetings and more.
- Creates graphic and video content as necessary
- Works with Lansing Public Media Center (City TV) on video projects
- Advises Public Service staff in developing communication strategies.
- Develops and implements a departmental social media strategy, coordinating with stakeholders across the organization to ensure its effectiveness and adoption of relevant social media techniques into the organization’s culture; current social media platforms include department Facebook and individual community center Facebook pages, Twitter, Instagram, and Pinterest.
- Develops and manages Public Service Department’s website, including content creation and updating.
- Writes, reviews, and edits the Public Service Department’s web and social media content.
- Organizes and develops Swish the Fish mascot program
- Interacts daily with public via social media and citizen engagement tools
- Develops strategy and implements digital communication during a crisis or city emergency in coordination with the City’s Communication Manager.
- Conducts a wide range of planning activities including developing long and short-range goals and objectives, and writing a wide range of monthly, seasonal and annual reports and procedures
- Performs a wide range of office administration tasks including operating a personal computer and other office equipment, maintaining records and files, preparing citizen mailings, and more
- Utilizes strong analytical ability to evaluate end-to-end customer experience across multiple channels and customer touch points
- Writes, edits and sends traffic advisories, press releases and various other media releases from the department
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Drives personal/city automobile to and from work sites as required
- Work 40 hours a week, typically from 8:00 am – 5:00 pm Monday through Friday with evening and weekend hours as needed.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $47,835.09 - $71,143.63 per year
