The city of Las Vegas is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Control Center Supervisor to supervise DPS Communications Specialists in providing public and employee safety and oversee dispatch, call-taking, data search and entry into specialized databases, and information flow to animal control, parking enforcement, corrections transport, and other field officers.
Typing Certificate (Attached to Application)
As a minimum requirement for this position you must be able to type 35 net words per minute as demonstrated by a typing certificate dated no later than one year prior to the date of application.
The typing test must be 5 minutes in duration and include number of errors and net words per minute. You may obtain a certificate from an online company such as https://www.freetypinggame.net/free-typing-certificate.asp.
Certificate Exemption: If your current position requires a typing certificate at the same level or higher than 35 net words per minute you are exempt from attaching a certificate to the application.
Type of Examination
A civil service examination will be conducted in accordance with the Civil Service Rules of the city of Las Vegas. The test for this recruitment is the EMERGENCY COMMUNICATIONS test through National Testing Network.

Additional Background Process

Selection Process
Final candidate selection will include list placement and may include hiring interview with skills assessment. Any individual offered employment will be required to pass a pre-employment drug test, complete background check, education and experience verification, and may be required to demonstrate the ability to perform the physical requirements of the job. Supervision Received and Exercised
Receives direction from higher level management staff. Acts as formal supervisor, exercising direct supervision, including selecting new employees, monitoring and formally evaluating performance, and participating in the discipline and termination of employees
Essential Functions:
- Prioritizes, plans, assigns, supervises and reviews the work of staff responsible for providing services to the department and the public in the following areas: access to the detention facility; receipt of calls regarding detention services, animal control, parking enforcement and marshal services; contact with on-duty field employees; and a variety of inmate record-keeping and coordination.
- Controls and monitors all video security cameras and electronically controlled security access gates and entrances within the detention facility.
- Maintains contact with all officers in field units using telecommunication systems. Coordinates emergency calls and relays information and assistance requests involving other law enforcement and fire agencies. Retrieves and inputs communication, public safety and other information into National Crime Information Center (NCIC), Nevada Criminal Justice Information System (NCJIS), Shared Computer Operations for Protection in Enforcement (SCOPE), and other applicable databases.
- Supervises and assists with difficult callers or unusual situations.
- Acts as first line supervisor for designated staff within a department, including interviewing and selecting of job applicants, training, overseeing work, and establishing and evaluating appropriate performance standards in accordance with department objectives.
- Ensures employees adhere to established work methods, techniques and schedules, and comply with applicable city and department policies, procedures, standards and specifications; reviews needs with appropriate management staff; allocates resources accordingly.
- Recommends and assists in the implementation of division goals, objectives, policies and procedures. Assists with the annual development and submission of business plan measures. Prepares and presents monthly performance statistics and reports. Recommends and implements approved policies and procedures.
- Supervises the use of and operates telecommunication and security video equipment; test and inspect communication lines and recording and emergency distress equipment to ensure continued operation; arrange for repairs; maintains supplies as needed.
- Confirms warrants for officers in field units and outside law enforcement agencies.
- Coordinates with other law enforcement agencies to provide required documentation, arranges transportation for inmates, and otherwise coordinate the inmate release process.
- Accesses and enters data into a variety of specialized computer databases housing inmate information, such as National Crime Information Center (NCIC), Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS), Shared Computer Operation for Protection in Enforcement (SCOPE), and others.
- Ensures that a variety of automated and manual logs, records and files are maintained.
- Participates in the planning process related to the collection of data used to prepare reports; prepares reports as requested.
- Participates in the preparation and administration of the division budget. Submits budget recommendations. Monitors all financial transactions, expenditures, and identifies and reports potential financial overruns and variances at an early stage. Prepares reports on actual and estimated revenues and expenditures.

Experience:
Four years experience in the reception of public safety calls and dispatching of public safety personnel. Supervisory or lead experience is preferred.
Training:
Equivalent to graduation from high school plus additional specialized training related to public safety response and dispatching.
Must attend training and pass test required by FBI National Crime Information Center within six months of the date of appointment, and proficiency must be affirmed every two years thereafter by the designated Terminal Agency Coordinator.
License or Certificate:
Must type 35 net words per minute, as demonstrated by a typing certificate dated no more than one year prior to the date of application.
Possession of a Communications Center Supervisor certificate issued by the Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials International within six months of the date of appointment.
Possession of a Communications Training Officer certificate issued by the Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials International within one year of the date of appointment.
