5,000 Signing Bonus

There is a 4% COLA that will be effective the first full pay period of July 2024, and 2025. Sworn staff have the option of contributing the unused health insurance balance to a 457 or taxable cash of unused balance (up to $670 / month).

Incorporated in 1989, the City of Lathrop is located in the Northern San Joaquin Valley and sits east and west of the San Joaquin River. Interstate 5, Interstate 205 and State Route 120 intersect within the city. We are located approximately 70 miles east of San Francisco and 70 miles south of Sacramento. Monterey, Santa Cruz, Napa Valley and the Sierra Nevada Mountains are all located within 2 hours of Lathrop.

Lathrop is centrally located within a 30-minute commute of Tracy, Manteca, Stockton, Ripon, Lodi, Modesto, and Livermore. Lathrop's population as of January 1, 2023, reported by the State of California Department of Finance, is 35,080 which represents an 11.1% growth from 2022. Additionally, the City of Lathrop made headlines in 2021, 2022, and 2023 as one of Northern California's fastest-growing communities. With the continued growth in the residential communities, our population is anticipated to reach approximately 70,000.

Lathrop Police Department

The City of Lathrop Police Department was established in June 2022. The Department consists of the Chief of Police, 2 Captains (Operations and Support Divisions), 2 Lieutenants, 6 Sergeants, and 32 Police Officers. The Department is supported by a team of Community Service Officers, Records Unit, Property and Evidence Unit, as well as administrative and budget support staff. Dispatch services are contracted with the City of Ripon.

Police Officer

The City is looking for experienced Police Officers to fill a current vacancy. Newly hired Police Officers will be enthusiastic and compassionate individuals committed to community policing and dedicated to addressing the needs of the community. Under general supervision, performs law enforcement and crime prevention tasks and duties related to the protection of public health, safety, and welfare; patrols an assigned area to ensure the enforcement of all applicable federal, state, and local laws; performs investigative work; and performs additional related duties as assigned.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Education and Experience

    Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be graduation from high school or equivalent and successful completion of a Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) certified Police Academy. College-level coursework and specialized training in law enforcement, criminal justice, or a related field are highly desirable.

    Additional Requirements :

    Must be at least 21 years of age; must successfully complete a comprehensive P.O.S.T. background investigation, physical examination, drug testing, and psychological evaluation; must be legally authorized to work in the United States by federal law at the time of appointment and meet all set forth by P.O.S.T. and California law.

    License / Certificate :

  • Possession of a valid California P.O.S.T. Basic Certificate or valid California P.O.S.T Basic Course Waiver at the time of application.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid CPR certification.
  • Possession of a valid California Driver's License, Class C or higher, prior to the date of appointment.

    Physical Working Conditions :

    Must possess mobility to work in a standard office setting and use standard office equipment, including a computer; maintain P.O.S.T. physical standards, including mobility, physical strength, and stamina to respond to emergency situations and apprehend suspects; vision to maintain firearms qualification and to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person, before groups, and over the telephone or radio. Due to the varied and unpredictable nature of police work, the incumbent may also be required to perform the following : make precise arm-hand positioning movements and maintain static arm-hand position such as when sighting and shooting a firearm; may require continuous and repetitive arm-hand movements; use sufficient strength and agility to enable the incumbent to sprint, or jump; coordinate the movement of more than one limb simultaneously such as when using hand radio while driving a vehicle or searching a building with firearm drawn, flashlight on, and opening and closing doors; bend or stoop repeatedly and continuously over time such as getting in and out of patrol car or gathering evidence at crime scenes; wear a 15 lbs. utility / gun belt which requires the continuous support from stomach and lower back muscles; may require the movement of heavy objects 50lbs and more. Operate various office equipment such as telephones, computers, copiers, fax machines, etc. Safely operate the following equipment in the performance of duties : A variety of City-owned vehicles; firearms; communications equipment, such as two-way radios, cell phones, and pagers; mobile display terminals (MDT); various audio-visual equipment; and any other equipment assigned.

    Vision :

    See in the normal visual range with or without correction.

    Hearing :

    Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction. Environmental Conditions Requires working outdoors and using body, ear, and eye protection such as safety helmets, armored vests, earplugs, utility belts, and other specialized equipment; involves exposure to loud noise levels, cold and hot temperatures, inclement weather conditions, traffic, violent persons, assault hazards, vibration, confining workspace, chemicals, mechanical and / or electrical hazards, and hazardous physical substances and fumes. Employees in this class are subject to the threat of injury and life-threatening hazards as part of police safety operations. Incumbents may be required to work rotating shifts and assignments, and may work overtime with little or no notice.

    Working Conditions :

    Must be willing to work extended shifts or be called back in emergency situations and respond to personal danger which may include exposure to armed / dangerous persons, dangerous animals, communicable diseases, hazards of emergency driving, hazards associated with traffic control and working in and near traffic, and natural and man-made disasters.

    Twelve days annually and one floating holiday. New employees hired after July 1st shall not accrue a floating holiday until the following July 1st.

    Sick Leave

    96 hours (accrued bi-weekly). Upon accumulation of 96 hours sick time, up to 40 hours may be converted to vacation as outlined in the Personnel Rules and Regulations

    Health Insurance

    The City currently contributes up to a maximum of $2,093 per month for Health Insurance (medical, dental, and vision) for full-time employees and eligible dependents for 2025.

    Term Life Insurance

    City paid coverage equal to annual salary.

    Deferred Compensation

    Voluntary employee participation in four (4) 457 plans.

    Employee Assistance Program

    The EAP provides clinical and short-term counseling, as well as assistance for financial, legal, childcare and eldercare issues.

    Flexible Spending

    Voluntary employee participation in medical and dependent care flexible spending accounts.
