The Assistant Director of Parks and Cultural Services (Recreation) plays a leadership role in planning, organizing, and directing recreational programs and cultural initiatives that serve the residents and visitors of League City. Under the general direction of the Director of Parks and Cultural Services, this position manages recreation staff and facilities, oversees special events, and ensures a high standard of service delivery in alignment with the City’s mission and community needs. The Assistant Director collaborates with other city departments, community organizations, and stakeholders to enhance the quality of life in League City through innovative recreational and cultural programming. This position requires strategic planning, strong leadership, and budget management skills.
- Provide leadership and direction to staff responsible for the development, implementation, and evaluation of recreation and cultural programs, events, and services.
- Manage daily operations of recreational facilities including community centers, parks, athletic fields, and aquatic centers.
- Develop and administer annual budgets for recreation programs and facilities; monitor expenditures to ensure alignment with budgetary goals.
- Assist in the development of strategic plans, policies, and procedures to guide department operations and future growth.
- Ensure programs and services comply with all applicable laws, regulations, and City policies.
- Lead community engagement efforts, fostering partnerships with local schools, nonprofits, and businesses to promote recreation and cultural events.
- Oversee hiring, training, supervision, and performance evaluation of recreation staff; promote professional development opportunities.
- Provide leadership during emergency preparedness and response efforts involving recreational facilities or services.
- Prepare reports, presentations, and communications for city leadership, boards, and commissions.
- Act as the Director in their absence, ensuring continuity of leadership and service delivery.
Non-Essential Job Functions:
- Attend community events and represent the City in public forums and professional associations.
- Assist with grant writing and securing sponsorships or funding for programs and facilities.
- Participate in citywide initiatives and cross-departmental projects.
- Perform all other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor’s degree in Recreation Management, Public Administration, or a related field.
- Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in recreation or cultural services, including supervisory experience.
- Master’s degree in a related field.
- Certification as a Certified Park and Recreation Professional (CPRP).
- Experience in municipal government or public sector leadership.
- Comprehensive knowledge of recreation management, public administration, and cultural programming.
- Strong leadership, organizational, and decision-making abilities.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build positive relationships with staff, the public, and stakeholders.
- Proficiency in budgeting, financial analysis, and resource management.
- Ability to analyze trends and community needs to design effective programs.
- Familiarity with the operation and maintenance of recreational facilities and equipment.
- Must be able to work outdoors in varied weather conditions.
- Occasionally lift up to 30 pounds and navigate parks and facilities on foot.
- Work is performed in both an office and outdoor setting.
- May involve exposure to loud noises, inclement weather, and physically demanding activities during events or site inspections.
Salary : $88,713 - $128,634
