UN-CERTIFIED, ENTRY LEVEL FIREFIGHTER
Qualified candidates who are selected for hire must be available to attend Tennessee State Fire Academy Training with no absences. The academy dates are to be announced post-hire.
Qualified candidates must have clear background, clear motor vehicle and pass pre-employment physical (hearing, vision, overall fitness and lifting), and drug screen examinations. A basic physical agility test will be administered in the initial stages of the candidate screening process. This test involves a timed fitness course that includes running, jumping, negotiating obstacles, dragging a 175 lb. mannequin, crawling and climbing.
Work performed includes fighting fires, answering emergency calls and performing related work as required.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Responds to alarms and assists in the suppression of fires, including rescue, entry, ventilating, and salvage work;
Performs cleanup and overhaul work;
Assists in maintaining fire apparatus and equipment, and cleaning fire station and grounds;
Checks and tests fire hydrants;
Participates in continuing training and instruction
Program by individual study of technical material and attendance in scheduled drills and classes;
Conducts station tours and explains equipment to public;
Enters structures, searches for and rescues occupants;
Assists in residential and commercial fire prevention inspections;
May serve as fire dispatcher as assigned;
Required to complete training to obtain EMT Certification.
Performs related tasks as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- General knowledge of firefighting techniques and procedures as applied to fire suppression.
- General knowledge of fire prevention strategies and techniques; some knowledge of emergency medical techniques and procedures.
- Ability to learn technical firefighting principles and techniques, and principles of hydraulics applied to fire suppression.
- Thorough knowledge of the street system and physical layout of the City.

Basic Minimum Qualification Requirements
Education - High School Diploma or G.E.D. is required.Driver's License - Valid Tennessee Driver's License and clear driving record are required. Training Requirements - Must attend and participate in any and all training academy classes and further medical training as required by the departmental policy.Additional Requirements - Employment is probationary for the first 12 months from hire date.
Must pass pre-employment physical examination, drug screen and background check.
Must be available to work from 7am to 7am, any day of the week, including weekends and holidays. (24 hours on duty, 48 hours off duty).
This is a safety sensitive position.

Men must maintain facial hair that meets departmental requirements so as not to interfere with the S.C.B.A. mask.
Unsightly or offensive tattoos are not permitted or must be covered. Tattoos should not be exposed while wearing department uniform.
Physical Requirements

1. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to reach with hands and arms and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, run, or crawl. The employee is also required to stand, walk, and taste or smell.
2. Hearing is required to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or make fine distinctions in sound. You must have normal ability to understand speech in noisy areas, understand whispered speech, and be able to localize sounds. All candidates shall be tested for sharpness of hearing, to establish a record of hearing ability at the time of recruitment and to provide a valid basis for disqualification of such candidates as are found to have obvious hearing defects which would interfere with ordinary firefighter operations, such as inability to clearly perceive sounds within the normal voice range, or such sounds as are transmitted by fire sirens, fire radios, or voice commands, within normal decibel limits.
3. Must have the mental and physical ability to work in confined spaces.
4. Must have the physical ability to perform firefighting operations by navigating many obstacles and have the ability to maintain high levels of exertion in times of emergencies.
5. Must be able to wear 50-60 pounds of equipment for the duration of an emergency incident and perform required job duties with such equipment on person; must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. and move or drag heavy (over 100 lbs.) objects, such as equipment and road debris, and lift, carry and drag to assist in emergency treatment of victims and patients; must be able to extract victims from automobiles and buildings; must have sufficient overall strength to self-rescue and rescue victims; must be able to work from elevated positions and have the ability to climb and work from a ladder.
6. Visual acuity is required for night vision, peripheral vision, preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work and observing general surroundings and activities. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

1. While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts; in high precarious places; and in outside weather conditions and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme heat. The employee is occasionally exposed to extreme cold and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud. Conditions present high stress and threat to personal safety; may be exposed to toxic materials, blood borne pathogens and other infectious environments;, unsafe building sites; may be required to extend work schedule during emergency situations. Conditions are generally unsafe.
2. Work generally consists of 24-Hour shifts totaling 212 hours in a 28 day period. May be required to work overtime as needed and with limited advance notice.

Additional Information
Position is hourly, non-exempt for purposes of wage and hour. Starting salary is based on 2808 hours at $46,562.62 annualized. Once a Firefighter completes academy and all required training, the position moves to Certified Firefighter at $50,017.34 annualized.
