Summary:
The Utility Operator is responsible for operating, maintaining, and repairing municipal water, wastewater, and stormwater systems to ensure public health, environmental compliance, and efficient service delivery. This position requires technical expertise, a strong commitment to safety, and adherence to municipal, state, and federal regulation.
Key Responsibilities System Operations
- Monitor and operate municipal water treatment, distribution, and wastewater collection systems.
- Conduct routine inspections of pumps, valves, meters, and other equipment.
- Adjust system settings to maintain pressure, flow, and quality standards.
- Utilize SCADA systems and other tools for remote monitoring and diagnostics.
- Reads and repairs meters by picking up and completing work orders and changing out broken meters
- Maintains sewer lines by digging, cutting and splicing lines, piecing in cover-ups, cleaning, marking and repairing lines, correcting stoppages, locating sewer lines, flagging locations, cleaning lines with jet cleaners, and making any other necessary repairs.
- Maintenance & Repair
- Perform preventative maintenance on utility equipment and infrastructure.
- Diagnose and repair water mains, sewer lines, and other utility components.
- Flush, clean, and maintain hydrants, valves, and storm drains.
- Respond promptly to emergency repairs, including after-hours service calls.
Compliance & Reporting
- Collect and analyze water and wastewater samples for compliance with regulations.
- Maintain detailed records of system performance, maintenance, and inspections.
- Assist in preparing reports for regulatory agencies and internal use.
Safety & Training
- Adhere to all safety procedures and protocols, including confined space entry and chemical handling.
- Participate in ongoing training and certification programs.
- Conduct safety inspections of equipment and worksites.
Customer Service
- Respond to public inquiries and complaints regarding utility services.
- Provide courteous and professional communication with residents and other stakeholders.
- Assist with utility meter reading and service turn-ons/turn-offs as needed.
Qualifications Education & Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Technical certification or coursework in water/wastewater operations preferred.
- Minimum of 1-3 years of experience in utility operations, maintenance, or a related field.
Licenses & Certifications
- Valid [state] driver’s license (Commercial Driver’s License may be required).
- Certification in water distribution, wastewater treatment, or equivalent (e.g., Class I or II Operator License) preferred.
- Ability to obtain additional certifications as required by the municipality.
Skills & Abilities

- Assists with the maintenance of pump stations, lift stations and equipment by repairing pumps and pump stations, checking levels at lift stations, cleaning lift stations and replacing packing
- Strong mechanical and troubleshooting skills.
- Ability to read blueprints, maps, and technical manuals.
- Basic computer proficiency for data entry and reporting.
- Physical ability to perform heavy manual labor and work in adverse weather conditions.
- Ensures safe water conditions for residents by collecting water samples for analysis
Working Conditions
- Work is performed outdoors and indoors, often in varying weather conditions.
- Regular exposure to hazards such as chemicals, wastewater, and confined spaces.
- Requires lifting, bending, climbing, and standing for extended periods.
