Under general supervision, to be responsible for vehicle traffic control at the City landfill, including load check inspection of acceptable public and privately collected refuse to be disposed of at the landfill site; to perform semi-skilled manual duties under general supervision; to operate water truck for dust control; and perform other specifically related work as required.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS:
The class of Landfill Coordinator represents a general entry level position in providing traffic control and refuse inspection at the landfill site. Incumbents must enter this classification with mechanical abilities; job knowledge relative to the landfill site will be gained through on-the-job experience.
The following duties are typical of this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the duties and/or may be required to perform specific additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.
Directs all vehicles in a safe manner to the appropriate unloading area; inspects all materials received; assists in the placement of traffic control devises; operates a water truck to control dust and for compaction of travel ways; uses landfill scale computer system; assists in collecting of cash, use fees and preparing use fee charge tickets; assists the equipment operators in the minor maintenance and cleaning of power driven equipment; assists in the placement of litter control fencing; performs general maintenance functions and related work as required.

The typical qualifying entrance background is one year of general maintenance, sanitation or landfill work, including some operation of large motorized equipment, and operation of a personal computer.
LICENSE REQUIRED: Possession of a valid and appropriate California driver's license.
Knowledge of: Simple record keeping; Proper methods, materials, tools, and equipment used at the landfill site; Appropriate safety precautions and procedures; Basic computer operations
Ability to: Maintain simple records; Safely direct vehicle traffic;
Drive and operate a heavy duty motorized vehicle efficiently and safely; Understand and carry out oral and written instructions, including local and/or state laws pertaining to landfills; Establish and maintain effective relationships with customers and co-workers; Operate personal computer (PC).

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS: Incumbents are subjected to adverse conditions such as working in inclement weather, dirt, odors, and other conditions common to a landfill site. Constantly work outdoors, occasionally indoors. Constantly work with others, occasionally work alone. Frequently exposed to dust, fumes, smoke, gases, odors, excessive noises, slippery or uneven walking surfaces. Frequently drive equipment/vehicles. Occasionally exposed to chemicals, solvents, grease or oil; use a computer. Rarely work at unprotected heights or work with explosives; rare exposure to flames/smoke.
