What are the responsibilities and job description for the PT General (Technician) - Civil Engineering Intern position at City of Lompoc?
The City of Lompoc is seeking a qualified candidate for a Summer Civil Engineering Intern position in the Public Works Department. This is a terrific opportunity for a college/graduate civil engineering student to support a number of exciting projects while learning important technical, social, and ethical skillsets. Under the direct supervision of technical, professional, and administrative staff you will perform various project tasks including researching, compiling, and evaluating project data, preparing spread sheets, performing calculations, record keeping, information processing, servicing the public, construction management and clerical support for the Engineering division; and performs other specifically related task as required.

Examination Process: Based on the information provided, the best qualified applicants will be invited for further examination. The examination process will consist of, but not limited to, an interview. Subsequently, top candidates may be invited for follow-up interview with the Division Manager.
Selection Process: The candidate ultimately chosen for the position, as authorized by City and state policy, will be subject to a background investigation and live scan fingerprinting for purposes of investigating criminal history for certification and employment consideration. A negative TB test will also be required.
Failure in any one part of the examination or selection process will disqualify a candidate from further consideration.
License Required: Possession of a valid California Driver's License is required.
Education/Experience: High school diploma and enrollment in and accredited engineering program required. Completion of at least 2 years of undergraduate coursework towards a degree in civil engineering or similar.

- Assisting technical staff with various project tasks, including researching, compiling, and evaluating project data, and performing calculations for various Capital Improvement Projects.
- Assisting in project administration including writing, gathering information, drafting grant applications, drafting correspondence, tracking project costs, and completing progress reports.
- Performing simple calculations, computer data entry, along with some exposure to MicroStation, GIS, and design.
- Utilizes technical manuals and directives to ensure compliance with codes, standards, ordinances, and policies including but not limited to Caltrans, Greenbook, and City of Lompoc.
- Work with a multi-discipline engineering and design team.
- Participate in team meetings and project meetings.
- Occasional field work collecting and/or analyzing field and survey data.
- Performing research and contacting vendors and agencies for information.
License Required: Possession of a valid California Driver's License is required.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

- Although not required, experience using Microsoft Office and MicroStation is an asset.
- Familiarity with using a keyboard and computer operating systems.

- The paid internship is an at-will, temporary, part-time position with a term of approximately 3-4 months.
- The salary for this position is $18-22 per hour, dependent on experience. It is not eligible for insurance and other fringe benefits that are offered to regular full-time employees.
- Flexible schedule of 24-29 hours per week on average.
- Must be willing to travel to Lompoc 3-5 days a week and have reliable transportation.
Salary : $18 - $22
