Seasonal Employment

Position Information:  Positions available only seasonally during the year with the City of Longview.  The Summer Employment Program positions perform varied tasks under the direct supervision of a regular City employee to assist the department and assigned division with seasonal needs. 

Application Instructions:  Submit your application and indicate which department within the City you are interested in applying.  Applications will be forwarded to hiring managers for review.  Preference is given to applicants currently attending college.  Some positions require background checks, valid driver's license and a copy of a driving record prior to hire.

Public Works Maintenance Department:  Performs a wide variety of manual labor duties in the maintenance and construction of the City roads and bridges. The work involves physical manual labor while performing road repair, preventative maintenance and traffic control (flagging) tasks.  Seasonal employees will operate a City vehicle and miscellaneous light equipment and practice good safety habits.  Job duties may include: driving and flagging; setting up and moving signs; moving fences and setting mailboxes; asphalt work (raking and shoveling); loading and unloading materials; filling pot holes for utilities, shoveling rock; cutting brush and weeds/feeding chipper; mixing cement; rip rap headwalls; and other duties as assigned. Valid Driver's License is required.

Traffic/Sign Shop:  Performs manual labor duties assisting full-time staff which may include: setting out road signs; driving City vehicles; cleaning equipment, shop and yard, striping roads with paint; placing pavement markings; replacing signs, installing new signs, and repair of flashing lights; traffic control (flagging), loading equipment and materials; marking pavement and painting; various sign maintenance tasks; assisting with making of signs; and other duties as assigned. Valid Driver's License is required.

Utilities:  Performs manual labor duties assisting full-time staff which may include: assisting with water and sewer utility related duties and assignments; traffic control (flagging); setting out road signs; driving City vehicles; cleaning equipment, shop and yard; loading equipment and materials; marking pavement and painting; various sign maintenance tasks; and other duties as assigned. Valid Driver's License is required.

Parks Maintenance/Urban Forestry: Assists with maintaining City owned-parks and street trees. Work is performed outdoors and primarily includes mowing, line trimming, weeding, trash pick-up, event setup/cleanup, watering trees and assisting full-time staff on projects. Seasonal employees operate City vehicles and equipment like trucks, utility vehicles, mowers, string trimmers and backpacks blowers. Valid Driver's License is required.

Finance: Assists in organizing, scanning and filing for the Utility billing department.

Transit: Assists the Transit Facility Maintenance/Customer Service Technician with pressure washing, painting, shelter cleaning, trash collection and bus stop upgrades including setting concrete forms, installing solar lighting and new signage. May be working independently or as a team with the Technician. Drive City vehicles. Valid Diver's License is required. May also be tasked with basic clerical duties as needed.

Mint Valley Golf Course: Guest Services will assist with the daily golf operations at Mint Valley Municipal Golf Course including managing and tracking play, protecting and controlling assets, and providing other services to ensure an exceptional golf experience for our clientele.  Some duties can include assisting with the restaurant, pro shop and driving range.Applicants must be 18 years of age or older prior to the date of hire.  Preference given to applicants enrolled or accepted in a college or university program.

• Work is performed in a City office or facility or in the field, depending upon position assignment. 
• All positions require clear speaking and hearing sufficient to communicate effectively and respond appropriately both in-person and on the telephone.
• Potentially hazardous conditions may be present for some positions when traveling to off-site locations or working in roadways or field locations.
• All positions typically require: reaching, handling/grasping documents or materials, sitting and/or standing for extended periods of time, walking short distances, vision sufficient to read source materials or computer screen data and repetitive motions for computer or hand tool use.
• All positions require exertion of force of 20 pounds occasionally and/or 10 pounds frequently to lift/carry/move objects, files, and other material.
• Some field positions may require lifting/carrying/moving objects or materials up to 90 pounds.
• All physical exertion is performed under the supervision of a regular City employee who provides on-site training or assistance to ensure appropriate safety precautions.

Salary : $17 - $20
