What are the responsibilities and job description for the Seasonal Lifeguard position at City of Longview?
Coordinates and performs a variety of lifeguard duties on behalf of the City's Parks and Recreation Department; supervises and provides for the safety of swimmers; prepares accident and incident reports; assists in cleaning and maintaining pool facilities; and performs other related duties as required.

When you pass this prerequisite swimming skills test, you will be qualified to take the Lifeguard training class to obtain your American Red Cross Lifeguarding including Deep water certification and First Aid for Public Safety including CPR/AED for professional rescuers certification valid for 2 years.Serves as Lifeguard; supervises and monitors the activities of swimmers. Identifies and addresses unsafe swimming practices/behavior by patrons. Explains and enforces facility rules and regulations. Responds to emergency situations; administers First Aid and/or CPR as required. Prepares and submits accident and incident reports. Participates in cleaning and maintaining swimming pool facilities. Documents and performs chemical testing. Cleans and sanitizes pool area and locker/restrooms. Assists in ensuring pool facilities are safely and properly maintained for use by the public. Participates in opening and closing pool area. Provides staff support to other recreation personnel as required. Performs other related duties as assigned or required.No experience is required as this is an entry-level position. Lifeguard Training and First Aid and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer certifications issued by the American Red Cross are required. Must possess a valid Texas Driver's License.Work is performed in and around municipal swimming pool facilities. Subject to swimming, sitting, standing, walking, bending, reaching, kneeling, crouching, crawling, climbing ladders, and lifting of objects up to 40 pounds. Exposure to water, pool chemicals, cleaning agents, infectious diseases, blood borne pathogens, and bodily fluids is involved. Exposure to UV light/rays at outdoor swimming pools is involved.

Prerequisite Swimming Skills Evaluation
- Swim 150 yards completely submerged using either the front crawl or breaststroke or combination of both.
- Maintain position at the surface of the water for 2 minutes by treading water using only the legs.
- After maintaining position above the surface of the water for 2 minutes, swim 50 more yards

You have 1 minute and 40 seconds to complete the following
- Start in the water, swim 20 yards, then surface dive (feet first or head first) to a depth of 7ft to 10ft to retrieve a 10 pound object.
- Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point, holding the object at the surface with both hands and keeping the face at or near the surface.
