DEFINITION
To operate a variety of fire apparatus and firefighting equipment; to respond to fire alarms, medical emergencies and other emergency calls to protect life and property; and to conduct a full range of basic fire services including fire suppression, rescue, vehicle extractions, medical aid, hazardous material containment, building inspection, public education and other activities to safeguard life and property.

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Reliable and dependable attendance and punctuality.
- Drive and operate various fire apparatus to alarms; connect and lay hose lines; enter burning areas or buildings with hose lines; assist in operating nozzles and direct a stream of water on fires; carry and operate chemical fire extinguishers; raise, lower and climb ladders; make forcible entry into buildings when necessary.
- Perform daily checks and maintain vehicles, equipment and personal protective gear.
- Ventilate buildings; administer first aid; assist in rescue, overhauling, salvage and clean-up.
- Respond to hazardous material leaks; contain hazardous materials.
- Drive and maintain trucks and other emergency vehicles; operate engine pumping equipment and apparatus.
- Assist in the maintenance of clean and orderly conditions of fire station and grounds.
- Participate in fire investigation activities; identify, collect and preserve evidence at fire scene.
- Attend special events to provide public education regarding fire prevention and protection of life and property.
- Participate in building plan reviews to ensure conformance with fire codes and fire prevention requirements; respond to questions and provides direction to developers, architects, engineers and contractors; make field inspections as required.
- Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees and the public using principles of good customer service.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge of:
- Principles, practices, methods and techniques of modern fire suppression and life safety activities.
- Principles of mechanics and hydraulics.
- Operation, maintenance and uses of firefighting apparatus and equipment.
- Advanced first aid and CPR.
- Principles and practices of work safety.
- Local geography, including the location of water mains and hydrants.
- Building codes and regulations.
- Understand and follow both oral and written instructions.
- Remain calm and focused during emergency situations.
- Apply principles, practices and procedures of modern firefighting and protection of life and property.
- On a continuous basis, know and understand all aspects of the job and observe safety rules; intermittently analyze problem equipment; identify safety hazards; locate equipment; interpret work orders; remember how to operate equipment; explain work to other employees.
- Intermittently, sit while driving equipment; stand, walk, bend, twist, kneel, squat and climb ladders or up on equipment; perform simple power grasping, pushing, pulling and fine manipulation; lift or carry weight of 100 pounds or less.
- Maintain a physical condition and endurance equal to the needs of this position. This includes a full range of motion and physical abilities, including lifting, carrying, driving, etc.
- Safely drive, operate and maintain fire vehicles, equipment and apparatus.
- Understand and act in accordance with departmental policies, rules, and regulations.
- Analyze situations and adopt effective courses of action.

- Must be age eighteen (18) by date of application.
- Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.
- Two (2) years experience in public fire suppression as a career firefighter.
- Possession of a California Class C driver license with Firefighter Endorsement or Commercial Class A or B with Endorsement.
- Possession of a Firefighter I Certificate by date of application.
- Possession of a California EMT-1 Certificate by date of application.
- Driver Operator 1A/1B courses completed by date of application.
