Job Description
Did you play with TONKA trucks and TONKA equipment as a child? Do you still see yourself or have experience moving equipment, digging deep holes, picking up objects with mechanical claws, and, in particular, vacuuming and hauling loads of liquids? Then working as a HEAVY EQUIPMENT OPERATOR II for Public Utilities may be a great position for you! This position will primarily operate the city's vac truck, disposing of various liquids from our Water and Wastewater Plants. This position will also help vacuum storm water drains and ensure our distribution systems are running smoothly. This position requires a CDL “B” license, with a Vacuum Endorsement or the ability to receive the Vacuum Endorsement after testing. The Heavy Equipment Operator II also safely operates various heavy equipment as assigned and based on capabilities, such as loaders, back hoes, excavators, asphalt trucks, and dump trucks used in the transportation of various materials and other heavy equipment. The HEO II washes, reports needed services to Fleet, and makes minor adjustments and repairs to assigned equipment. He or she also inspects assigned equipment to ensure it is working properly before use.
The ideal candidate has a high school diploma or GED and two years of similar experience in the construction industry. Must possess at least a Class B CDL. Candidates must be proficient in the operation of hydraulic excavators, graders, and bulldozers; must know the operational limits and specifications of various heavy equipment. We are looking for a self-starter who is prepared to get to work with a positive attitude, who has the physical strength and stamina to perform the rigorous duties of this job.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Safely operates assigned equipment, in particular the City's Vacuum Truck as well as other heavy equipment such as loaders, back hoes, excavators, asphalt trucks, dump trucks, and other heavy equipment.
- Inspects assigned equipment prior to operation on a daily basis and reports any issues to supervisor.
- Immediately notifies supervisor of equipment issues that affect life safety and equipment performance.
- Follows all safety and security procedures.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- Two years of experience preferred.
- Valid Class B CDL or higher, with a Vacuum Truck Endorsement.
- Highly professional and dependable.
- Able to follow spoken and written instructions.
- Must know the operational limits and specifications of the equipment to which they are assigned and be able to follow proper rigging standards and ensure quick-connect attachments are connected properly.
- Must follow all safety and health rules and regulations.
- Must have the physical ability to navigate a construction site and work in dirty or dusty surroundings; enter/exit machines comfortably; lift/carry objects; stoop, bend, and crouch; use hands, arms, and legs fully; and see well (naturally or with corrective lenses).
