This is a responsible paraprofessional position involved in the preparation and processing of payroll and various accounting and financial records, coordinating clerical activities, training and providing assistance to other clerical staff to ensure the timely completion of payroll and other finance department tasks. The position requires significant judgment and discretion in completing assigned tasks or special projects with a high degree of independence. The work is performed under the supervision of the Transit Accountant 3.

Examples of Duties and Responsibilities
Primary Payroll Expert:
Process payroll for Transit Operators, auditing timecards, verifying that leave usage is in compliance with City requirements and the labor agreement, answering payroll related questions from employees, etc.
Process hires, separations, transfers and promotions in finance software
Review represented employee time data and verify that all pay related provisions of the labor contract are followed
Communicate with managers and supervisors to resolve errors and discrepancies
Accounting Activities:
Reconcile revenue deposits to general ledger accounts
Perform tests of the farebox system to ensure that equipment is performing accurately by reconciling reports to cash counts
Perform random audits to verify receipt of purchased items
On a rotating basis, sort and count currency and coins received from fare boxes and record totals for the deposit
Administrative Support Activities:
Assist with preparing complex reports using Excel and presentation software
Prepare monthly cash room schedule
Maintain employee and department databases and spreadsheets by tracking seniority and status changes including position and wage updates
Perform complex vacation and longevity changes for pre or post 1998 employees on long-term leave according to labor agreement terms
Serve as lead-worker by training and being able to perform all job functions associated with the Account Clerk positions
Financial Software (Munis) Specialist:
Develop customized screen instructions using current finance software modules for refresher and new Metro employee training
Train new employees on software functions specific to their positions
Respond to Finance Related Inquiries:
Investigate and respond to payroll related questions from employees, auditors, other City agencies, etc.
Serve as backup for all other cash room, payroll, accounts payable, and accounts receivable related functions
Prepare documentation and ad hoc payroll reports at the request of Metro Management, City Human Resources, auditors, etc.
Perform related duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
Three (3) years of advanced level work in accounting or related field, one (1) year of which must be processing payroll using related software
-OR-
Associate's Degree in math, business, accounting or related field; AND one (1) year of advanced level work processing payroll using related software

Special Requirements
Physical Requirements:
Ability to meet the transportation requirements of the position.
Ability to push, pull and lift up to 30 pounds when lifting bags of coins and moving a wheeled safe.
Other than above, work is primarily sedentary in nature and performed in an office environment. Employees will be expected to use standard office equipment such as a telephone, computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine.
This position is an in-office position. Regular remote work is not an option.
Listed salary is at step 3 per Union agreement.
