The Community Development Department is seeking a charismatic, energetic, team-oriented individual who is flexible and highly motivated. The successful applicant will be a technically proficient and customer service-oriented individual who can perform routine to complex inspections of residential and commercial building construction and to review construction plans for compliance with applicable building, structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing and related codes and ordinances.

The hiring range for this position will be: $75,316.80 - $103,563.20, DOQ.

Typical duties include:
Reviews architectural, structural, electrical, mechanical, plumbing and site construction plans for conformance with applicable codes and policies.
Conducts field inspections for code compliance of residential and/or commercial structures including architectural, structural, electrical, mechanical, gas, plumbing and other items.
Interprets codes and aids contractors, engineers, architects, and the public to resolve outstanding plan review and inspection issues to process and approve applications over-the-counter for minor construction projects.
May serve as Deputy Building Official as assigned.
Minimum Required Qualifications
High school diploma or GED supplemented by a Vocational/Technical degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Plumbing Systems, Construction, or related field; at least five (5) years of experience in both commercial and residential plan review and inspections is required; or any combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.
Special Requirements
Must have either a Residential Building Plans Examiner Certification or Commercial Building Plans Examiner Certification and obtain and maintain within eighteen (18) months of employment: Residential Building Plans Examiner and/or Commercial Building Plans Examiner certifications and one of the following three certifications: Electrical Plans Examiner, Mechanical Plans Examiner, or Plumbing Plans Examiner. Must possess and maintain a valid Virginia driver's license.
