Job Overview
The DPW Laborer is to perform functions within the Department of Public Works (DPW) to ensure the efficient and effective operation of the City of Manchester. The DPW Laborer is to work under the supervision of the Superintendent of the DPW.
Responsibilities
- An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential duties: (These examples do not include all of the duties which the employee may be expected to perform.)
- Water and Sewer:
- Line repairs and maintenance including cleaning and flushing with
- appropriate tools; routinely flush hydrants; dig trenches; assist in making taps; maintenance and repair of manholes and catch basins.
- Streets and Sidewalks:
- Seasonal street maintenance including operating trucks to remove snow, leaves and dirt from the roadway; manual removal of snow, ice and debris form sidewalks; sand and salt streets and sidewalks as needed; spread stone chips on streets, sand on shoulders; fill pavement cracks and holes with asphalt and stone; spread dust control materials on streets; sweep streets, gutters and alleys.
- Ground Maintenance:
- Shovel snow, mow and plant grass; lay sod; plant and trim trees and shrubs; clear brush and dead trees; cut wood; chip branches with chipper; rake and haul leaves; weed garden areas; move dirt and rocks as needed.
- Parks:
- Repair, maintain and construct recreation and playground equipment.
- Clean-Up Duties at Worksites:
- Filling in holes; recovering or patching roadways; landscaping when necessary; other clean-up to restore sites to a safe and workable condition.

- Employment Qualifications
- Current Michigan Driver’s License (Class B Commercial Driver’s License or higher required)
- Ability to establish and maintain satisfactory working relationships with supervisors and other employees
- Must be able to lift 125lbs
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $22.00 - $24.00 per hour
Expected hours: 40 per week
