Summary/Objective
To increase attendance numbers and secure revenue at Sunset Zoo through offering a quality product by operating the areas of marketing, public relations, development, guest services, and by contributing to the overall mission and goals of Sunset Zoo. Oversees operations of the zoo gift shop and concession operations; oversees the facilities rental program, plans and executes various marketing and promotion functions, special events, membership campaigns, and facilitates all fundraising activities and campaigns. Contributes to the daily operation of Sunset Zoo by acting as a Zoo Administrator. Some weekend and holiday work required. Must be able to be available in times of crisis, monitor social media accounts before and after work operational hours, including but not limited to evenings and weekends.
Essential Functions
Directs marketing and development operations at the zoo.
- Plans a successful membership campaign to increase revenue for overall annual attendance. Uses social media, as well as print, web page, and visual media, to market the zoo, its programs and events (i.e., brochures, newsletters, flyers and annual report); ensures proper distribution.
- Implements exit, focus, phone, zip code, and random sample surveys to collect demographic and psychographic information. Compiles and evaluates statistical data for use in marketing plan.
- Creates annual marketing and promotion plan to serve as a guide for all events, promotions, coupon campaigns, and advertisement strategy.
- Communicates with media through various communication efforts, news outlets, and social media platforms.
- Institutes and maintains fundraising activities and campaigns; includes grant writing, individual asks, corporate fundraising, special events, donor campaigns, membership campaigns, and working with other community outlets to acquire funding.
- Researches, writes, edits, and completes grant applications meeting deadlines. Manages grant funds and completes final report forms in a timely manner.
- Communicates with state and national legislators regarding animal and conservation issues.
- Schedules, designs, and supervises booths at regional fairs, festivals, expos and other public outlets. Schedules parade appearances and supervises scheduling special uses of zoo for pavilion rental, group rates, weddings, receptions, family reunions, and other.
- Creates zoo signage and maintains accurate zoo maps.
- Plans, organizes, and executes at least major and several minor special events. Schedules and appears on radio and television broadcast programs representing the zoo.
- Supervises gift shop maintenance duties.
Supervises the marketing, seasonal, and all volunteer staff.
- Hires and trains staff members, as needed.
- Provides supervision and oversight of applicable staff.
- Coordinates schedules of applicable staff.
- Administers City of Manhattan Policies and Procedures in a consistent manner.
- Ensures employees supervised demonstrate productivity, competence, and high morale, as well as utilize employees’ skills and abilities.
- Conducts performance planning and evaluations for employees in a timely manner, to include development of goals, objectives, and deadlines.
- Resolves routine personnel issues or problems.
- Leads and manage staff with clear and consistent communications.
Performs additional duties as required.
- Attends required meetings and training.
- Prepares reports.
- Interacts and participates in appropriate Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) committees and projects
- Manages unpleasant interactions and stress caused by irate and/or defensive customers.
- Ensures compliancy with all applicable regulations, policies, and procedures in all duties.
Requirements
Required Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in business administration, marketing, or related degree or, high school diploma or GED and five (5) years' work experience in public relations practices, computer information systems, general office applications, business management, desktop publishing, and grammar and oral communication practices.
- Membership in Association of Zoos and Aquariums.
- Valid driver’s license.
