Minimum Qualifications of Education and Experience:
- High School Diploma/GED is required.
- Experience working with municipalities or private industry in general maintenance and repair work, truck driving, and operation of various types of light and heavy equipment.
- Must possess a valid Minnesota Class D (standard) driver's license and be able to drive; and must obtain a Minnesota CDL Class A driver's license (with no restrictions) and a tanker endorsement within one hundred and twenty (120) days of employment.
- Any satisfactory equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties of the job proficiently may be substituted for the above requirements.
Nature of Work:
- The Public Works Operations Technician A position is responsible for the operation of equipment, vehicles, and the performance of job activities required to maintain the city streets and parks and other municipal properties, such as plowing snow, sanding and/or salting roadways, crack sealing, mastic, street sweeping, pothole patching, sign maintenance, facilities maintenance, trimming trees, mowing, parks and trails maintenance, leaf pick up, landscaping and grounds repair. May be assigned to one or more functional areas within the department.

Primary Essential Work Functions:
- Safely and proficiently operates all vehicles, and light, heavy, and complex equipment utilized by the Operations Division to ensure proper maintenance of streets, parks and other municipal properties.
- Performs streets maintenance, including crack sealing, mastic patching, skim patching, pothole patching, overlaying streets, grading unsurfaced roadways and alleys and maintaining rights-of-way; and fabricating, repairing and replacing signs in the public right-of-way.
- Performs parks and open space maintenance, including planting, ordering plants and materials for annual plantings; transplanting, trimming, felling, removal and care of trees, shrubs, flowers, and turf; graffiti removal; swimming pool, campground, baseball and soccer fields, trails, and playground maintenance.
- Safely plows snow and performs other related snow removal activities with light and heavy equipment.
- Performs all assigned tasks according to established safety rules, regulations, and practices, and promptly reports work related injuries, unsafe conditions and near miss incidents to immediate supervisor.
- Provides daily maintenance as required to equipment assigned.
- Must be available to work overtime or be on call at various hours beyond the regular work shift in order to facilitate meeting desired conditions of streets and respond to varied work assignments.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:
- Demonstrated proficiency in operation of Division required equipment.
- Knowledge in vehicle and equipment operation and principles of automotive engines and equipment, and the minor servicing and repair of vehicles and equipment.
- Knowledgeable of laws, ordinances, and regulations pertaining to vehicle travel and operation of equipment.
- General knowledge of safe operation of light and heavy equipment and hand and power tools.
- Ability to organize and prioritize daily work tasks while experiencing multiple interruptions.
- Ability to adapt to changes in tasks and responsibilities.
- Ability to multitask and respond appropriately to competing priorities and deadlines.
- Knowledgeable in proper lifting techniques used in strenuous lifting of heavy objects.
- Knowledge of parks and open space maintenance.
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, and the general public.
- Must possess a valid Minnesota Class D (standard) driver's license and be able to drive; and must obtain a Minnesota CDL Class A driver's license (with no restrictions) and a tanker endorsement within one hundred and twenty (120) days of employment.
- Satisfactory completion (passing) of pre-employment FMCSA Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse Query, background examination, physical examination, and drug testing.
- Must meet expectations of the work functions and knowledge, skills, and abilities for the position.
- Must comply with organizational and departmental policies.
- Must comply with data practices policies and standards relative to not public data. Any access to not public data should be strictly limited to accessing the data that are necessary to fulfill the employment responsibility. While data are being accessed, incumbent should take reasonable measures to ensure the not public data are not accessed by individuals without a work reason. Once the work reason to access the data is reasonably finished the not public data must be properly stored according to city policy and the Minnesota Statutes.
