What are the responsibilities and job description for the Assistant Fire Chief position at City of Mansfield?
Starting Salary Range: $156,313.83 - $164,129.47 DOQ

OPERATIONAL OVERSIGHT
- Direct and manage fire suppression, fire-based EMS, and special operations to ensure prompt and effective emergency responses.
- Develop, implement, and monitor policies, procedures, and protocols for operational readiness and efficiency.
- Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal laws, as well as industry standards such as NFPA guidelines and EMS regulations when applicable.
- Coordinate mutual aid agreements and partnerships with neighboring jurisdictions and agencies.
- Ensure compliance with training standards, certification requirements, and professional development programs.
ADMINISTRATIVE OVERSIGHT
- Oversee department budgeting, procurement, and resource allocation to ensure fiscal responsibility and operational efficiency.
- Manage personnel processes, including recruitment, promotions, and performance evaluations.
- Develop and implement strategic plans for departmental growth and improvement.
LEADERSHIP & MANAGEMENT
- Provide direct supervision and guidance to key departmental leaders, including battalion chiefs, division chiefs, captains, and administrative personnel.
- Foster a culture of teamwork, accountability, and continuous improvement among department staff.
- Serve as a member of the senior command staff and assist in strategic planning, budgeting, and decision-making processes.
SPECIALIZED RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide strategic direction to ensure safe and effective operations.
- Conduct after-action reviews to evaluate performance and implement improvements.
- Collaborate with medical directors to evaluate and improve EMS delivery.
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
- Represent the department at public meetings, community events, and inter-agency collaborations.
- Engage with the community to promote fire safety, emergency preparedness, and public health initiatives.
- Represent the department as our Public Information Officer (PIO).
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Proven leadership and decision-making skills in high-pressure environments.
- Strong understanding of fire suppression tactics, EMS operations, and disaster response.
- Exceptional communication, interpersonal, and public speaking abilities.
- Proficiency in data analysis and technology used in fire and EMS operations.
- Commitment to fostering a respectful workplace, the ability to unite people and ideas constructively, and the skill to inspire and achieve optimal performance from others, even when faced with differing opinions.
REQUIRED EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
- Associate degree.
- Master Firefighter Certificate as issued by the Texas Commission on Fire Protection.
- Minimum three years supervisory experience at the rank of Battalion Chief.
- Texas Class "B" driver's license.
- Emergency Medical Technician as issued by the Texas Department of Health.
DESIRED TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor’s degree
- Fire Officer III & IV
- Emergency Medical Technician Paramedic as issued by the Texas Department of Health.
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- The position requires both office-based work and field presence during emergency responses.
- Must be able to work extended hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, as needed.
- Physical ability to perform firefighting and emergency medical tasks when required.
