The Position
The City of Maple Grove is seeking a Engineering Intern. In this position, you will assist engineering staff with inspection and management of the City’s active construction projects, right-of-way management tasks, including using engineering principles to review and respond to right-of-way permit applications, and assisting city staff with inspections. Additionally, you will be responsible for assisting with construction inspections and surveying, quantity computation and documentation, and recordkeeping. - Demonstrates ability to understand and respect the diversity of customers and co-workers, effectively communicating with individuals whose first language may be one other than English.
- Perform construction observation and inspection of the City’s public improvement projects to ensure construction to regulatory agency standards. Site activities commonly include utility work, grading, concrete and asphalt installation, and site restoration
- Assist with right-of-way inspections, commonly inspecting utility work, driveways, and retaining walls
- Update record drawings in AutoCAD
- Work with Engineering staff to improve the permit review and inspection process
- Interact with other City staff, residents, contractors and other government agency personnel
- Field questions from residents and permitees and assist in providing information
- Fundamental engineering principles and practices
- Construction materials and design concepts
- Surveying techniques and tools
- AutoCAD, Civil 3D, or other design software project documentation and reporting standards
- Local, state, and federal engineering practices
- Apply engineering principles to City engineering projects
- Analyze and interpret technical data, drawings and specifications
- Conduct site inspections and fieldwork
- Communicate technical information clearly, both verbally and in writing
- Work effectively in a team environment and collaborate with professionals
- Interact with members of the public, contractors, and other city employees in a professional manner
- Solve problems using critical thinking and analytical skills
- Manage time efficiently and prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment
- Adhere to engineering codes, regulations, and safety standards

- Prepare technical reports, documents, and memorandums
- Assist in project planning, scheduling, and cost estimation
- Enrolled in or graduated from a post-secondary program in Civil Engineering, Civil Technology, Public Works, or Land Surveying.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office 365, PDF applications, email, tablet, and smartphone applications.
- A valid driver’s license.
- Ability to lift up to 25 lbs.
- Previous training or experience in construction observation, municipal operations, or civil engineering.
- Experience working with AutoCAD, ArcGIS, and asset management software.
- Experience reading and interpreting engineering plans and drawings.
- Experience working with and incorporating the perspectives of multiple communities, people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
- Knowledge of engineering construction techniques, methods, and materials.
- Interest in or experience with municipal or utility infrastructure sector, permitting or inspection experience, and customer service.
Work is conducted both indoors and outdoors. Employee is subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions. Exposure to adverse weather conditions and/or in the presence of heavy construction equipment may occur on project sites. Employee is subject to noise, but generally free from additional work hazards.

- Regularly operate computers and other office equipment, such as a copy machine, printer, and telephone, as well as equipment/tools commonly used by surveyors and engineering technicians.
- Regularly travel around the City to meetings or events, operating City vehicles as needed.
- Frequently remain in a stationary position and regularly move within the building to attend meetings and access files and office machinery.
- Occasionally move through uneven, rough terrains and environments containing mud, water or wet conditions.
- Occasionally move or transport items weighing up to 25 pounds.
