JOB SUMMARY

This is a professional public service position in the Marion Public Library. The Library Assistant - Makerspace is responsible for managing and facilitating the use of the library’s Makerspace. Such equipment varies up to and including 3D printers, sewing machines, laser cutters, Cricut machines, and more and includes the Recording Studio and Greenscreen rooms. This position will provide training to patrons on how to operate the equipment, develop and lead makerspace programs, maintain inventory, and ensure a safe and welcoming environment for all users to create and learn through hands-on activities.


ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES/WORK PERFORMED

·        Prepare and conduct programming relevant to the makerspace, recording studio, and greenscreen room and concepts contained within.  Develop and implement a variety of innovative special event programs that speak to and capture the interest of varying age groups. To include age-appropriate programs, programs directly related to public schools and students, drop-in programs for all ages, summer programs and special evening programs.

·        Managing all aspects of programming, including appropriation of resources, coordinating with library leadership, and promotion/publicity.

·        Coordinate with Marketing Manager for social media, website, and library newsletter content.

·        Recruit, train, and coordinate with Makerspace volunteers for the highest effectiveness of service to the community.

·        Train staff on the use and maintenance of makerspace equipment as needed.

·        Monitor and maintain inventory of Makerspace for available technology and services. To include donations received by the community.

·        Contribute monthly board reports to represent Makerspace use.

·        Collaborate on IT strategy, goals and assessment for Makerspace equipment.

·        Provide tours for Makerspace, available technology, and services.

·        Represent library at outreach and community events.

·        General Makerspace support.

·        Maintain quality of Makerspace through cleanliness and readiness.

·        Work with the Foundation Director for grant and sponsorship opportunities for makerspace.

·        Attend and participate in library staff meetings and training sessions

·        Attend workshops and continuing education programs

·        Assist patrons of all ages in the use of all library services

 


REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

·       Knowledge of makerspace equipment

·       Knowledge of emerging technologies within or related to the field

·       Ability to work with large groups, small groups, and one-on-one settings

·       Ability to proficiently communicate in public settings

·       Advanced skills relating to the internet, programs, and technologies related to makerspace

·       Moderate computer and software skills related to makerspace

·       Ability to perform mathematics necessary for quantitative analysis of services

·       Ability to work with minimum supervision

·       Ability to represent the library to the public, including large groups

·       Excellent communication skills both written and verbal with all ages, including children, tween, teens and adults

·       Ability to manage priorities with frequent interruptions

·       Ability to be creative in designing programs that reach diverse community interests

·       Meet or exceed Iowa State Library certification requirements

 


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & PHYSICAL ABILITIES

·       Ability to sit, bend, stoop, reach, stand, push, pull as required

·       Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds, and visual cues or signals.

·       Physical agility, strength and dexterity necessary for handling library materials up to 50 pounds

·       Dexterity to use basic technology equipment, including a keyboard, mouse, and touchpad

·       Dexterity to use advanced technology equipment, including hazardous surfaces and materials

·       Executive functioning skills appropriate for a busy, fast-paced environment

·       The employee is expected to possess the cognitive ability essential for rational decision-making regarding operational needs and the problems of the position, as well as the psychological and emotional stability and capability of functioning and making decisions under high-stress situations.

·       The employee is expected to be able to hear, speak, read, write and understand English.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university is required.
  • MLIS degree or its equivalent from an American Library Association accredited program is required or enrollment toward MLIS degree or its equivalent from an American Library Association accredited program.
  • Artistic proficiency and creative mindset.
  • Experience in public library service and policies preferred.
  • Experience with creating, executing, and running programming preferred.
  • Valid Iowa Driver’s License.


WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Works in an office environment
  • Work in a changing environment
  • Must be able to tolerate moderate noise levels
  • Work in an environment with varying smells including cleaning chemicals, makerspace supplies, and likely allergens because of makerspace equipment and services
  • Hours may flex upon demand for workload. Will require some evening shifts each week to provide optimal times for patron use of Makerspace.
