We are currently looking for lifeguards, swim lesson instructors, and cashiers. Lifeguards will need to have lifeguard certification prior to opening of the pool. We will offer a class in the early spring. Pool season runs Memorial Day through August 22.

Job Title: Seasonal Swimming Pool Lifeguard
Reports to Position: Recreation Superintendent
Location: Marion Pool
Overtime Status: Hourly
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
JOB SUMMARY
Provide a brief description as to the primary purpose of this job (no more than three to five sentences):
A lifeguard is responsible for the general supervision and safety of patrons at the Marion Municipal Swimming Pool. Work involves enforcement of all pre-established policies, regulations and procedures related to the municipal swimming pool. The position requires quick response to all rescue and emergency situations and educate pool patrons in the importance of positive and correct water safety practices. In accordance with Federal Fair Labor Standards Act requirements, this position has been classified as exempt from the Fair Labor Standards Act.
This position is not a paid overtime position per City of Marion policies.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES/WORK PERFORMED

· Maintain constant surveillance of patrons in the water.
· Must ensure the safety of all participants.
· Provide emergency care and treatment as required until the arrival of emergency medical services
· Must use judgment in prohibiting any activity or practices that may endanger the patron, other patrons, or any spectator.
· Must be tactful in handling disciplinary problems and must use self-restraint in language, temper and manners.
· Must always act and present themselves in a professional manner, in all situations.
· Must insure all patrons follow personal health and safety regulations as established by the Iowa Department of Public Health and Marion Parks and Recreation Department Aquatics Division.
· Administer first aid requirements as directed and accurately complete the necessary forms and paperwork for every situation.
· Report any behavior/disciplinary problems to supervisors and complete the necessary forms.
· Cooperate with and complete all tasks assigned by the shift supervisor.
· Assist the supervisor in opening the facility.
· Assist in the maintenance of program equipment and report all supply needs to the supervisor.
· Clean and disinfect facility areas, including the bath and changing rooms, as directed.
· Complete maintenance and cleaning rounds of the facility as directed.
· Assist other personnel with their assigned duties during rush periods, or minor maintenance work during off periods.
· Assist in securing the facility prior to leaving, as directed.
· Attend all in-service and training meetings and practices.
· Perform all other duties as assigned.
· Responsible for providing public safety by supervising the safe use of public aquatics facilities by patrons. The position enforces safety regulations in a skilled, professional, and friendly manner.
· Lifeguards are also responsible for general pool and facility maintenance, cleaning, and other related duties as assigned.
· Participation in mandatory in-service training is a requirement of the position.
· Examples of duties include: keep swimmers safe by alert observation and enforcement of water safety and pool rules, maintain discipline at the pool facilities, aid troubled swimmers in emergencies, provide emergency lifesaving services to patrons in need, provide instruction aquatics programs as needed, provide general pool and deck area upkeep, other related duties as assigned by the Managers and Recreation Superintendent.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

· Must always be aware of the guidelines stated in the Iowa Department of Public Health Swimming Pool Administrative Code, Section 641.15.4 (5) d entitled: Lifeguards and Shallow Water Guards.
· Knowledge of all personnel and operation policies, specific pool rules and regulations, and specific emergency procedures for the pool.
· Knowledge of guard rotation, which is set by management in accordance with swimmer load and the number of personnel needed, along with the responsibilities of each guard station.
· Ability to concentrate on pool supervision in an active outdoor environment with many distractions.
· Ability to maintain order of pool areas, including tactfully handling disruptive patrons.
· Ability to administer first aid and CPR
· Skill in swimming, including lifesaving techniques.
· Must have thorough knowledge of lifesaving techniques, personnel scheduling and water safety practices.

· Must not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the work place or citizens encountered during work.
· Must be able to sit erect when in the guard chair in an alert manner without draping over the arms of the chair for extended periods of time.
QUALIFICATIONS

· Be at least 15 years of age.
· Hold current Red Cross Lifeguarding, CPR and First Aide Certifications or obtain prior to the pool season.
