General Statement of Duties and Distinguishing Features of Class
Under general supervision, Electrician/Inspector will perform work enforcing compliance with residential and commercial building codes, National Electrical Code and zoning ordinances as well as other ordinances effecting property. Provides information to contractors, architects, general public, co-workers, etc. Work varies, requiring interpretive judgment within prescribed standards and procedures, and choosing from alternatives. Employee must remain current on building, electrical, HVAC, energy and accessibility codes and attend required continuing education and other seminars to maintain certifications.
Employee will review plans and building applications for residential and commercial projects with the various building and zoning codes and ordinances. Meets regularly with CBO, other inspectors and Fire Department. Receives complaints of building code and ordinance violations and investigates or forwards to appropriate individual for follow-up investigation. Visits job sites to determine compliance at stages from beginning to completion of construction and conducts inspections in accordance with the approved construction documents; files copies of inspections for future reference as construction progresses. Completes inspections scheduled each day and maintains productivity to meet demand. Performs special investigations, such as buildings proposed to be moved or razed and recommends actions which will result in compliance. Performs a variety of installation, troubleshooting and repair tasks on electrical systems for the City.

- Consults on-site with contractors regarding compliance;
- Works in new and existing projects throughout the City;
- Ensure electrical safety on all City events;
- Makes site inspections of the construction of residential, commercial, and industrial buildings;
- Verifies and approves electrical and mechanical work;
- Inspects fire alarm systems;
- Upon completion of the building, makes final inspection;
- Perform electrical installations and repairs as assigned;
- Files and maintains records of all inspections;
- Understanding and applying blueprints and technical diagrams
- Using various devices, including ammeters, voltmeters, thermal scanners and cable testers, as well as hand and power tools
- Installing or replacing wiring, lighting, electrical controls, breakers and other electrical devices
- Inspecting and maintaining electrical systems in homes and businesses
- Adhering to state and local building regulations
- Completing work orders on time
- Documenting the work completed and materials used
- Working with other electricians, general contractors, architects and other team members
- Operates City vehicle in a safe and responsible manner in performance of job duties; and
- Assists with other duties as assigned, i.e. customer service, leaf pickup, mowing, snow and ice control, etc. as necessary.
