SUMMARY
 
Under direct supervision, the purpose of the position is to assist library patrons by providing service at various desks, and accurately arrange and shelve reading material.  Employees in this classification perform clerical level work.  Performs related work as required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Arranges library material in alphabetical and numerical order.
  • Shelves and retrieves material from the shelves.
  • Inspects library shelves for accuracy in shelving.
  • Assists in searching for lost or misplaced materials.
  • Processes library card application forms.
  • Provides service at the various public service desks using the automated library computer system.
  • Maintains holds shelves, adding and removing titles per requests and reports.
  • Assists patrons with circulation, directional, and informational questions.
  • Collects fines and fees.
  • Assists in training new employees.
  • Maintains information displays.
  • Maintains and updates list of new acquisitions.
  • Picks-up and straightens Non-Fiction, Reference, Fiction and Children's areas.
  • Assists other library employees as needed.
  • Assists in closing and securing library.
  • Comply with all written City policies and procedures.
  • Adhere to assigned work schedule as outlined in City and department attendance policies and procedures.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES & BEHAVIORS
  • Requires the ability to calculate, compute, summate, and/or tabulate data and/or information. Includes the ability to perform subsequent actions in relation to these computational operations.
  • Requires the ability to provide guidance, assistance, and/or interpretation to others on how to apply procedures and standards to specific situations.
  • Requires the ability to start, stop, operate and monitor the functioning of equipment, machinery, tools, and/or materials used in performing essential functions.
  • Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference data and information, such as library policy and procedure manuals.
  • Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
  • Requires the ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagrammatic form. Involves semi-routine standardized work with some latitude for independent judgment concerning choices of action.
  • Requires the ability to exercise the judgment required in situations characterized by repetitive or short cycle operations covered by set procedures or sequences.
  • Requires the ability to perform skilled coordinated movements, such as operating a computer terminal, photocopier, or cash register as well as shelving material.
  • Requires the ability to utilize a variety of advisory data and information, such as circulation manuals, Dynix manuals, reference books, commodity/service code and equipment repair manuals
  • The ability to pass a background and drug screen.
  • The ability to work in a team environment; contribute as a team member and treat co-workers, subordinates and customers with respect.
  • Build professional relationships with internal staff and customers.
  • Offer flexibility and adaptability, especially during times of change.
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

High School Diploma or GED required, supplemented by little or no previous experience or training; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. 

 
Any work related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above Minimum Qualifications is an acceptable substitute for the above specified education and experience requirements.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
  • Over two-thirds of on-the-job time is spent talking, hearing, standing, reaching and using one's hand to touch, handle or feel objects.
  • Between one-third and two-thirds of on-the-job time is spent walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling.
  • Under one-third of on-the-job time is spent sitting, climbing or balancing, tasting / smelling.
  • The ability to lift and / or exert force up to ten (10) pounds may be required over two-thirds of the time and up to one hundred (100) pounds may be required between one-third and two-third of the time.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
There is limited exposure to environmental conditions.
