Required Education and Experience :
- Graduation from high school or GED equivalent; and
- Six (6) years of full-time paid experience in firefighting and / or fire prevention, fire and life safety plans review, fire suppression and detection systems plan review, or equivalent experience with two (2) of those years in a progressively responsible leadership and / or management position.
- Bachelor's degree in Fire Science, Fire Administration, Public Administration, Business Administration, or other specific area of study as deemed applicable may substitute for two (2) years of experience

The City of Medford determines starting pay based on an evaluation of relevant education, experience, andqualifications as provided by the applicant in their application materials, alongside others who perform work of comparable character consistent with the Oregon Equal Pay Act. Three steps are included in this salary range, allowing opportunity for annual movement through the steps.
Note : Additional details related to certification pay, PERS, or other additional pays can be found in the IAFF labor agreement , which will be effective through June 30, 2026.

Essential Functions of the Position :
Supervising and coordinating fire inspections.
Fire origin and cause determination; process evidence.
Developing and implementing procedures and practices for providing public fire and life safety education presentations and messages.

Meeting with architects, engineers, contractors, and consultants. Conducts field inspections for construction projects, etc.
Preparing monthly incident and Division activity reports.
Assigning work, scheduling, providing guidance, employee development, hiring, disciplinary recommendations, etc.
Work Environment & Physical Demands : Work performed is primarily indoors in an office environment. May be occasionally exposed to a variety of settings including overheated, cold or wet environments, in and around structures that may be dangerous and / or unstable, and under unfavorable or unsanitary conditions including biohazards, and air and blood-borne pathogens. The noise level is usually moderate but may reach loud where the use of personal protective equipment is required.
The physical demands here are represented of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to communicate verbally, hear, sit, stand and walk for extended periods of time. Physical ability to wear and carry over 50 pounds of protective equipment and clothing including occasionally performing strenuous physical work. Potential exposure to adverse or stressful conditions during active emergency situations. Requires safely driving and operating a motor vehicle.
