The City of Melbourne is hiring two positions. 

Solo Paramedic Pay of $9,000/annually (FY 2025), $10,000/annually (FY2026) and $12,000/annually (FY 2027) starts upon clearance as a solo medic.

Education Incentive – Individuals hired with an associate or bachelor’s degree that qualifies for State Supplemental Compensation will have their salary adjusted by two steps.  Each step is approximately a 2.5% increase.

Personnel who earn and maintain technical certifications for Rope, Vehicle Machinery Rescue (VMR) and Confined Space shall receive incentive pay of $100.00 per month.  Personnel who earn Trench, Structural Collapse and Swiftwater technician certifications will receive an additional $25.00 per month, per certification.
 
REQUIRES 56 HOUR WORK WEEK 
 
 General duty work in the prevention of fire damage and emergency pre-hospital medical care.  Work involves responsibility for the protection of life and property by combating, extinguishing, and preventing fires.  Work occasionally involves strenuous exertion under hazards and such handicaps as smoke, heat, and cramped spaces.  The employee may be assigned to the operation of a piece of equipment.  Although prevention of fire damage and emergency medical care is the most important portion of the work, a part of the time is spent in training, study, and in maintaining and cleaning fire department equipment, apparatus, and quarters.  Work is performed as a member of a team and a superior officer is usually available to assign definite duties.  Work is reviewed by observation of results obtained and methods used.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS 
  • Combat, extinguish, and prevent fires.
  • Drive cars, pick-up trucks and other fire department vehicles.
  • Communicate with the public and use a radio.
  • Read training manuals, books and maps.
  • Draw pre-plans.
  • Perform housekeeping, cleaning equipment and buildings.
  • Troubleshoot equipment problems
  • Inspect, clean, carry and raise ladders.
  • Inspect, don and clean self-contained breathing apparatus.
  • Identify and inventory equipment and tools.
  • Set up portable pumps and hoses.
  • Fabricate salvage and overhaul equipment.
  • Operation of various manual, electric, and gas operated tools.
  • Operation of various types of lifting and hoisting equipment.
  • Identify sprinkler connections, utility shut-off and other construction features.
  • Identify safety problems.
  • Tie ropes for rescue and various knots.
  • Identify symbols, signs and colors for hazardous materials.
  • Provide pre-hospital emergency medical care, CPR, Basic life support, first aid, etc.
  • Perform extrication using power equipment.
  • Perform manual forcible entry using an axe, pry bar, crowbar, etc.
  • Advance hose line for fire suppression (charged and uncharged)
  • Other job-related duties as required.

High school diploma or GED required.  

State of Florida certification as a Paramedic or Emergency Medical Technician and completion of Fire Minimum Standards as required by the State of Florida.  

Must possess and maintain a valid State of Florida driver’s license. Applicants who possess a valid out of state driver’s license must obtain the Florida driver’s license within 10 days of employment. 

Hiring process includes a written exam (minimum average score of 60% and have at least 50% in each category to pass), physical abilities evaluation (pass/fail), medical scenario (pass/fail) and an interview. 

Position requires pre-employment agreement which includes remaining tobacco free during employment.  

Candidates must bring copies of required certificates with them to the written examination.  If copies of ALL certificates are not provided at the time of the written examination the candidate will not be allowed to take the written exam and will be removed from the process.  A list of required certificates will be provided to the candidates in the letter they will receive once the posting has closed.

 PLEASE NOTE: Please include copies of Florida Firefighter II certification and current Florida Paramedic and ACLS certification or current EMT and CPR certification with application. 

 Position requires pre-employment agreement which includes remaining tobacco free during employment.

Must meet Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS) background investigation requirement and maintain compliance throughout employment.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITY
 
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of modern fire fighting, fire prevention, and pre-hospital emergency medical care.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.
  • Ability to perform prolonged and arduous work under adverse conditions.
  • Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergency situations.
  • Knowledge of the street system and geography of the City.
PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
 
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle.
  • Ability to load and unload heavy objects weighing up to 75-100 lbs.
  • Ability to provide pre-hospital emergency medical care up to the Paramedic level.
  • Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, hear, talk, read, handle or feel objects and controls.
  • Ability to print and draw letters, numbers, words, characters, and symbols which are both large and small as well as identifying colors.
  • Ability to move back and forth and sideways while bending, kneeling, or squatting with approximately 50 lbs. of equipment.
  • Ability to go from a standing or sitting position to a bending, kneeling or squatting position or vice-versa, periodically with approximately 50 lbs. of equipment.
  • Ability to use power tools – dexterity required.
  • Physically capable to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to a personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine.
  • Physically capable of responding to emergencies in which walking, running, climbing, reaching, bending, lifting, pushing and pulling 100 lbs or more.
  • Must have the ability to lift, carry, push or pull heavy weights over uneven terrain, up/down stairs or ladders up to 100 feet in height.
  • Ability to work in a dimly lit, smoke filled or completely dark condition during hot, cold or inclement weather while dragging a charged hose line.
  • Ability to learn complex task and remember how to complete tasks without assistance or training.
  • Ability to treat people of every race, greed, gender, color or social status in a respectful and courteous manner.
  • Ability to mentally and emotionally cope with emergencies that may result in the loss of human life, severe traumatic injuries and psychological crisis in a calm and empathetic manner.
