This is a part-time position.
To assist the Municipal Court Judge in providing judicial services and administers justice in the disposition of cases within the jurisdiction of the Municipal Court.

SUPERVISION
General supervision is provided by the Municipal Court Judge.1. All behaviors comply with the Code of Conduct and Rules of Behavior outlined in Chapter 8 of the General Government Policies and Procedures Manual.
2. Preside over jury trials and bench trials for violations of Texas Penal Code, Texas Transportation Code, Texas Alcoholic Beverage Code, Texas Health & Safety Code, and City Ordinances in the Municipal Court.
3. Preside over non-contested hearings, juvenile appearance dockets, juvenile magistrate warnings, show cause hearings, and code enforcement dockets.
4. Respond to requests for search and arrest warrants by City law enforcement officers. Review affidavits for sufficiency of facts and determination of the existence of probable cause to issue search and arrest warrants. Determine if the objects of search warrants are appropriate, if the warrants are being requested in a timely manner, and if the scope of each warrant is appropriate.
5. Interview law enforcement officers and victims of family violence and determine whether or not to enter orders for Emergency Protection and, if an order is to be issued, define the persons and places to be protected. Conduct hearings on motions to modify or rescind emergency protection orders, make rulings on requests, and draft and issue appropriate orders to the affected citizens, law enforcement agencies and private organizations.
6. Conduct detention hearings for persons arrested on misdemeanor and felony violations. Administer magistrate warning to detained persons, determine if probable cause exists for further detention, and ascertain the financial ability of arrestees to make bail, and set bail amounts and other conditions of release.
7. Perform all other assignments/duties as required by the Municipal Judge. EDUCATION
Must be a graduate of an accredited law school.
Must meet the minimum Mandatory Continuing Education requirements for Municipal Court Judges as established by the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals.
EXPERIENCE
At least five years of demonstrated progressive and varied experience in trials, criminal prosecutions, magistrate duties, and municipal court operations.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES
Must be licensed to practice law in the State of Texas.
Possession of a valid driver’s license.
CITY CHARTER
In compliance with the City Charter, the judge shall be a resident of the City of Mesquite.
