Department: Public Works
Position: Public Works Director FLSA Status: Exempt
Job Summary: Responsible administrative planning and supervisory work in directing all activities of the Public Works Department including facilities maintenance, parks and recreation, canal dredging, vehicle maintenance and roads and streets. Work is performed under the administrative direction of the City Administrator.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Ø Supervises the Public Works Department; plans, assigns and directs the employees through the subordinates
Ø Develops plans and projects for the Public Works Department such as: short- and long-range goals, capital improvements as well as maintenance update scheduling
Ø Makes out works schedules and supervises work in progress
Ø Analyzes the budget and adjusts when necessary. Prepares recommendations for this upcoming year
Ø Inspects work done for the city by outside sources
Ø Directs the placement, training, promotions, discipline and evaluations activities of all public works employees
Ø Prepares specifications for bid work and selection
Ø Performs storm water inspections duties as required
Ø Meets with citizens and answers and investigates complaints
Ø Attends meeting and workshops
Ø Performs any other duties that maybe required from time to time
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Ø Knowledge of all phases of public works, facilities maintenance, parks, road and streets and drainage
Ø Knowledgeable of the equipment, tools and supplies required to accomplish all operations
Ø Ability to plan, direct and coordinate a wide range of public works systems and activities
Ø Ability to supervise a large number of employees through divisional supervisors
Ø Ability to create a positive image to the public relative to public works programs
Ø Ability to read and interpret plans and specifications for design and construction projects
Education and/or Training
Ø 5 years’ experience in progressively responsible supervisory position in a public works department
Ø Degree in management or related field preferred
Ø Valid Florida drivers license with acceptable driving record for insurance purpose (Class to be determined upon employment)
Physical Demands:
Ø Acceptable eyesight (with or without correction)
Ø Acceptable hearing (with or without hearing aid)
Ø Works outside in various weather conditions with slippery and uneven surfaces
Ø Heavy Lifting and carrying
Ø Walking, standing, bending, climbing, stopping, driving
Ø Works in an office environment and occasionally outside reviewing and supervising work
Ø Ability to communicate both orally and in writing
Ø Some stressful situations
Supervision Received and Exercised:
Ø Work is performed under the supervision of the City Administrator.
Pay Grade: EX2
