General Description

The Middleton Police Department is seeking motivated team-oriented candidates who are looking for a challenging but rewarding career in law enforcement. We will provide all necessary training, so no prior experience is necessary. We are also accepting applications for lateral transfers for those candidates who are already certified law enforcement officers. Lateral candidates may be eligible to enter at a higher pay and a signing bonus.

The Middleton Police Department consists of 53 employees, including 41 sworn officers. The staff includes a Chief of Police, two Captains, four Lieutenants, four Sergeants, four Detectives, two School Resource Officers, a Community Policing Officer, a K9 Officer, and 22 patrol officers.

Police Officers are generalists responsible for a wide range of tasks associated with police service, including but not limited to the enforcement of laws and ordinances, the investigation of crimes and other incidents of public concern, the protection of life, property, civil rights, and public order and other services which contribute to the individual and collective safety and welfare of citizens. Police Officers have the duty to be knowledgeable in the law and legal procedures; departmental policies, procedures, rules and regulations; the skills, techniques and practices necessary to successfully discharge their responsibilities. They are expected to be diligent and aggressive in the performance of duties and responsibilities consistent with department policies and priorities and to be mindful of departmental goals and objectives. Police Officers receive general supervision and from time to time receive direction as to specific duties and responsibilities from a supervisor. Their work is subject to review by ranking officers. Police Officers must obey lawful orders issued by appropriate authority.

Lateral Entry Provisions

Police Officers newly hired into the Middleton Police Department and possessing the following combinations of post academy experience and education, may at the sole discretion of the Chief of Police, enter laterally as a Police Officer II and progress as follows :

  • Officers with greater than four (4) years' experience and an Associate Degree shall enter as a Police Officer II. Promotions to Police Officer III shall be upon completion of four (4) years of service with the Middleton Police Department or upon obtaining a Bachelor's Degree and two years of service with the Middleton Police Department, whichever is reached first.
  • Officers with greater than four (4) years' experience and a Bachelor's degree shall enter as a Police Officer II. Promotion to Police Officer III shall be upon the completion of two years of service with the Middleton Police Department.

Police Officers hired and entering laterally as a Police Officer II shall enter at the accrual rate of fifteen (15) days of vacation per year.

This position is a Regular Full-Time Permanent position. Full time employees are eligible and required to participate in the Wisconsin Retirement System (WRS).     Essential Duties

  • Perform all lawful assignments as prescribed by the Chief of Police or his / her designee and perform miscellaneous services as required by state law, city ordinance, and department policy.
  • Engage in law enforcement patrol functions that may include :
  • working different shifts, including weekends and holidays, walking foot patrol, riding a bike, and physically checking the doors and windows of buildings to ensure that they are secure.

  • Operate a law enforcement vehicle during both day and night; in emergency situations involving speeds in excess of posted limits, in congested traffic and on road conditions affected by fog, smoke, rain, ice, and snow.
  • Effect an arrest using handcuffs and other restraints; subdue resisting suspects using maneuvers and weapons and resort to the use of hands and feet and other approved weapons in self-defense.
  • Pursue fleeing suspects and perform rescue operations which may involve quickly entering and exiting patrol vehicles; physically lifting, carrying and dragging heavy objects, climbing over and pulling oneself over obstacles, through openings (doors and windows); jumping from elevated surfaces, crawling in confined areas; balancing on uneven surfaces; using body force to gain entrance through barriers.
  • Perform searches of people, vehicles, buildings, and large outdoor areas which may involve feeling and detecting objects, detaining people, and stopping suspicious vehicles and persons.
  • Perform rescue functions at accidents, emergencies and disasters, administering emergency medical aid, lifting, dragging, and carrying people away from dangerous situations and securing and evacuating people from particular areas.
  • Detect and collect evidence and substances that provide the basis of criminal offenses and infractions.
  • Conduct visual and audio surveillance.
  • Monitor vehicle and pedestrian traffic and take steps necessary to ensure the safe and lawful movement of vehicles and persons.
  • Perform routine patrols of streets and other public places to prevent or observe crimes, other law violations or disturbances of the peace and initiate appropriate action.
  • Respond to medical emergencies and render aid until relieved by competent emergency medical personnel.
  • Probe suspicious circumstances.
  • Exercise independent judgment in determining when there is reasonable suspicion to detain, when probable cause exists to search and arrest, when force may be justifiably used, and to what degree.
  • Enforce City Ordinances and State and Federal laws impartially within specified limits of discretion as determined by department policy and their supervisor.
  • Effectively Communicate in varied situations that may include :
  • Communicate effectively and coherently over law enforcement radio channels while initiating and responding to radio communications.

  • Communicate effectively while gathering information in criminal investigations by interviewing and obtaining statements of victims, witnesses, suspects, and confidential informants.
  • Effectively communicate with people by giving information and directions, mediating disputes, solving problems, and advising of rights and processes.
  • Assist in resolution of conflicts and disputes.
  • Provide information to citizens or other assistance as appropriate.
  • Identify and report to the proper authority situations affecting the safety and welfare of the community.
  • Demonstrate communication skills in court and other formal settings.
  • Perform related administrative duties and tasks that may include :
  • Read and comprehend legal and non-legal documents, including the preparation and processing of documents such as citations, affidavits, and warrants.

  • Make initial and follow up investigations for reported crimes or other incidents warranting investigation.
  • Make lawful arrests and participate in the prosecution of offenders by providing evidence supporting conviction.
  • Operate department computers. Dictate, type, and write investigative and other reports, including sketches, using appropriate grammar, symbols, and mathematical computations.
  • Prepare reports and otherwise document activity as required by department policy and procedure.
  • Problem solving, in partnership with the community.

  • Read and comprehend legal and non-legal documents, including the preparation and processing of documents such as citations, affidavits, and warrants.

  • Legally able to possess a firearm.
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle and possession of, or ability to obtain and maintain a Wisconsin Motor Vehicle Operator's License.

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.

  • Sixty (60) college credits from an accredited institution of higher learning with a minimum of a "C" average within 5 years of employment.
  • Associate's Degree preferred, Bachelor's Degree or greater in Criminal Justice or related field highly preferred.

  • Any additional requirements as established by the Wisconsin Law Enforcement Standards Board or Middleton Police Commission.
