The Waunakee Police Department is now accepting applications for the position of Police Officer. This position is responsible for conducting patrol duties, responding to calls for service, assisting the public, enforcing traffic laws, investigating traffic crashes, conducting investigations, and enforcing federal, state, and local laws.
Applicants must be 21 years of age, have a valid driver's license, and have a high school diploma or equivalent and obtained an Associates Degree or 60 college credits. Any candidate selected for this position will be expected to complete the Law Enforcement Police Academy unless already completed.
Police officers generally work 11 hour shifts on a rotation that includes 2 on 2 off, 3 on 2 off, 2 on 3 off which includes having every other 3-day weekend off. Any lateral hire can start at a higher rate of pay and greater amount of vacation time than that of an officer with no previous experience.

GENERAL PURPOSE:
Waunakee Police Officers insure that bodily injury, loss of life and property due to illegal activities is minimized by providing prompt and effective police services to the community. This responsibility includes responding to emergencies, investigating criminal activities, and maintaining order in the community. Police Officers must be knowledgeable in law and legal procedures, department policies, procedures, rules and regulations necessary to successfully carry out the duties of the position.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Patrol all assigned areas for the prevention of crime and enforcement of State Statutes and Village Ordinances.
- Adherence to the Department’s Oath of Office, Mission Statement, Code of Ethics, and Departmental Policies.
- Respond to requests for services in both emergency and non-emergency situations and take appropriate action.
- Respond to ambulance calls and providing first responder assistance until Emergency Medical Services arrive.
- Take action to prevent criminal acts by checking residential, commercial, and industrial structures, investigating suspicious persons and activities.
- Response to and investigation of traffic accidents and incidents. Completion of accident reports.
- Enforcement of established traffic laws.
- Enforcement of criminal law; identify and arrest violators.
- Preparation of in depth police reports including; written reports/forms, typed reports, and dictated reports for transcription.
- Testify in court.
- Conduct initial investigations at the scene of criminal activity. Secure scene, identify and collect evidence, interview witnesses, victims, and suspects.
- Answer the telephone, dispatch information and provide information to the public on emergency and non emergency issues.
- Provide animal control services.
- Drive a squad car safely during routine and emergency situations, which will include driving at high speeds.
- Utilize all relevant police equipment. Maintain training as it relates to modern policing techniques.
- Insure that all police equipment and police vehicles used by the officer are properly maintained.
- Provide information and assistance to other law enforcement agencies as needed.
- Work with all members of the department as a team to achieve the department’s mission.
- Perform all other duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS OF THE JOB:
- Possess a minimum of an associate’s degree or 66 college credits.
- Strong moral character.
- Drive a squad car safely during routine and emergency situations, which includes operating at high speeds.
- Ability to physically perform the duties of a law enforcement officer.
- Possess Wisconsin Law Enforcement Standards Board Certification.
- Possess a valid driver’s license with good driving record.
- Ability to work as a team member with all other members of the department and other public safety entities.
- No felony or domestic violence convictions.
- Ability to successfully complete the department’s field training program.
- Ability to perform duties firmly, tactfully, courteously, and impartially, while exercising sound judgment.
- Excellent communication skills. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Skill and proficiency in the use and care of firearms, and all use of force techniques. Ability to pass the State of Wisconsin Firearms qualifications annually.
- Skill in observing situations objectively and recording them clearly and completely via reports.
- Ability to react quickly and calmly during emergencies.
WORK CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENT:
- Have the strength and dexterity to safely and effectively use a firearm, including passing the State of Wisconsin Firearms qualification annually.
- Have the ability to operate a motor vehicle under normal and stressful situations.
- Ability to perform all use of force techniques associated with law enforcement.
