What are the responsibilities and job description for the WTP Lead Operator position at City of Midlothian?
Starting Hiring Range: $59,701.82 - $73,134.73, annually
Under direct supervision, this position performs work in the inspection, operation, and maintenance of the City’s water treatment plants and pumping facilities. Supervises assigned personnel.
- Performs the required TCEQ water testing procedures.
- Walks to sample points to check the treatment process.
- Verifies the calibration of lab equipment.
- Performs water lab analyses of samples collected, including PH, alkalinity, chlorine, ammonia, NTU, and chlorine dioxide tests.
- Interprets the results of lab tests and makes chemical and pumping flow changes.
- Filters backwash, refills the chemical tank, skims filters and basins, and fixes minor chemical leaks.
- Receives chemical deliveries, puts up supplies, changes light bulbs, sweeps and mops floors, and takes out the trash.
- Makes copies of records as needed.
- May interact with various contractors and vendors.
- Monitors the treatment process by checking the chemical pumps, high service pumps, filters, and treatment equipment. Verifies chemical settings.
- Observes flocculation and sedimentation basins, monitors the distribution of water usage using SCADA, and checks the elevated storage tank levels.
- Responsible for organizing activities and functions during assigned shift.
- Assists with employee relations, conflicts, and issues.
- Interprets and applies policies and procedures.
- Maintains effective communication with staff.
- Responsible for keeping a safe work environment.
- Assists with training of operators.
- Performs all other duties as assigned.
Minimum of three years of experience in water treatment. Technical training in water treatment field is preferred.
Any equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
- Basic knowledge of chemistry and mathematical principles.
- Ability to work with complicated formulas, equipment, and chemicals.
- Knowledge of federal and state regulations pertaining to the treatment and distribution of drinking water.
- Ability to prioritize work, multi-task, and problem solve.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Ability to effectively work with others in a team environment.
- Ability to work and supervise personnel in a safe manner.
- Ability to interpret charts, flow diagrams, maintenance manuals and instructions.
- Ability to perform minor mechanical repairs.
- Skill in the use of computers and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems.
- Ability to be punctual and attend work regularly.
Special Requirements
Subject to be on-call during non-working hours. Works 12 hour shifts.
May work nights, holidays, and weekends.
This position is classified as a safety-sensitive position and is subject to random drug and alcohol testing during the course of employment.
Licenses & Certifications
Water Class C (Surface Water) license is required. Water Class B (Surface Water) license is preferred.
Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record as established by the City of Midlothian driving standards.
Work Environment
Work is primarily performed in both an outside environment (occasionally during inclement weather) and inside water treatment plant facilities. May be exposed to chemicals and gases in the work environment. Physical demands are sedentary in nature with prolonged sitting. Work causes fatigue of eyes, fingers or other facilities because of fairly continuous use of motor senses. May be called upon to perform heavy manual labor which involves lifting up to 50 pounds.
