Purpose
Carpenter 4s assigned to Bridge Operations & Maintenanceperform carpentry work necessary to maintain both bridges and buildingstructures under the jurisdiction of the Division.
The Bridge Operations & Maintenance Unit operates 20movable bridges and maintains 188 City-owned bridge structures. These bridgestructures consist of movable bridges, fixed bridges, viaducts, and pedestrianbridges. Over 300 City-owned assets are maintained through thebuildings-focused units within Bridges & Buildings, from commercial shedsto historic City Hall.
Essential Functions
Residential, Commercial, and Public Building Construction
- Install, maintain, and repair the following : Building components on residential, commercial, and public buildings. All types of roofing, gutters, flashing, and related elements. Structural and non-load bearing framing. All types of exterior facades, siding, trim, and sheet metal. Doors, windows, frames, and related trim, casework, and hardware. All types of floors and ceilings. Building furnishings, open interiors, workstations, furniture, and related cabinetry.
- Perform related finish work on laminate surfaces and solid surfaces; perform millwork and finish cabinetry.
- Board up vacant and fire-damaged buildings and upgrade code violations (on-call 24 hours per day, 7 days per week).
- Configure and work from scaffolding and aerial platforms / lifts at heights up to 100 feet.
- Erect heavy timber supports for bridge construction and repair.
- Direct laborers in conjunction with maintenance repairs to structures.
- Direct and train Carpenters 1-3 on these tasks.
Concrete Work
Construct concrete formwork on bridge decks, piers, stairways, retaining walls, ramps, approach roadways, pavements, sidewalks, and related structures.Direct and train Carpenters 1-3 on these tasks.Rough and Finished Construction
Perform rough and finished carpentry associated with light construction and remodeling.Direct and train Carpenters 1-3 on these tasks.Snow Removal

Conditions of Employment
Carpenter 4s must be willing and able to do the following :
Provide their own hand tools required for the profession.Respond to emergency board-ups during non-standard hours or at times work an altered work schedule.Wear a respirator and other personal protective equipment (PPE).Possess a high degree of dexterity and hand-eye coordination.Perform physically demanding work, including lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds of equipment or materials on a daily basis.Work at heights of up to 100 feet, in confined spaces, and in variable temperature conditions.Erect and work from scaffolding and swing stages.The preplacement medical requirements for this title includethe following :

Journey-level Carpenter or four years of equivalent experience required, including one year of professional carpentry experience related to essential functions.Valid driver's license at the time of appointment and throughout employment.Good driving record at the time of appointment and throughout employment.Desirable Qualifications

Knowledge of carpentry installation, maintenance, and repair terminology and practices.Knowledge of and adherence to safety policies and procedures when setting up and conducting work on a construction site.Knowledge of and skill in using the hand tools and equipment used in carpentry.Knowledge of flat and structural concrete formwork.Knowledge of and ability to do cabinetry work.Knowledge of and ability to do finish work.Knowledge of installation and maintenance of prefabricated open plan interior systems.Ability to learn and perform bridge carpentry.Ability to perform precise, high-quality, aesthetically pleasing work.Knowledge of mathematics and the ability to calculate time and material estimates and make accurate measurements.Ability to read and interpret building and bridge engineering and architectural plans and specifications.COMMUNICATION, INTERPERSONAL, AND LEAD WORKER

The current salary range (Pay Range 7JN) is $81,700-$104,841, and the resident incentive salary range for City of Milwaukee residentsis $84,151-$107,986. Appointment above the minimum is possible basedupon level of experience and other qualifications and is subject to approval.
Employees in job classifications who perform lead abatementduties which under federal regulations require the use of respirators andpersonal protective clothing shall receive an additional thirty-five cents($0.35) per hour while performing such duties.
