What are the responsibilities and job description for the WATER TREATMENT PLANT OPERATOR I, II OR III position at City of Monroe (NC)?
Performs semiskilled work operating a water treatment plant; does related work as required. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Chief Water Treatment Plant Operator.
This is medium work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for depth perception, color perception, preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts at or within arms length, operation of machines, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, noise, hazards, atmospheric conditions, oils, and wearing a self contained breathing apparatus.
Assisting in the operation of the water treatment plant; taking samples; performing routine tests; ensuring proper plant operation; maintaining records and files; preparing reports.
Makes regular inspection of plant and equipment to ascertain that it is in proper operation at all times.
Advises and assists when corrective action is required.
Collects samples for testing; performs tests relating to plant operations.
Checks all plant equipment and biological and chemical systems for proper operation and takes or advises on necessary corrective actions.
Replaces chlorine cylinders and regulates the flow of chlorine.
Reads meters, gauges, and dials and keeps logs of readings; monitors elevated storage tank levels.
Reports needs for equipment repairs.
Backwashes filters; fills chemical feeder hoppers.
Participates in classroom and on-the-job training to ensure timely attainment of Class II operator certification.
Performs plant maintenance, bulk chemical handling, grounds keeping, and housekeeping duties.
Performs basic laboratory tests.
Assists with unloading, storage, and dumping of bulk chemicals.
Maintains records and prepares reports.
Performs related tasks as required.
Some knowledge of water treatment plant principles and operating practices; some knowledge of the operating characteristics and maintenance requirements of a water treatment plant; ability to detect flaws in the operation of equipment and to effect proper remedial measures; ability to keep records and prepare reports; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school supplemented by on-the-job and formal instruction in water treatment plant operations and minimal experience in the operation of a water treatment plant.
Possession of a Grade C Surface Water Treatment certification.
Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina.
