CODE OFFICIAL/BUILDING INSPECTOR
The City of Monroeville is accepting applications for the combined Building, Zoning and Compliance position of a Full-Time Code Official. Under general supervision by the city clerk and mayor, the code official performs a variety of routine to complex duties in the field and in the office related to code and ordinance enforcement. These duties include, but are not limited to, enforcing the provisions of the building codes, zoning ordinance and other ordinances dealing with public nuisances, health, safety, sanitation, blight, and business licenses. The employee inspects building and housing for compliance with regulations for structural safety, zoning, plumbing, mechanical and related requirements. The employee oversees the City’s compliance program; including abatement of nuisances and monitoring compliance with the zoning code and other City codes and regulations.
Applicants must possess a valid driver’s license and be insurable under the City’s policy, possess a high school diploma and at least five years’ experience in building construction or code enforcement. A bachelor’s degree in building science is preferred. The candidate must be able to travel for short periods of time for seminars and workshops, obtain state certification as a building official or a building inspector, have a willingness to effectively represent the City in contacts with governmental agencies, businesses, professionals, property owners, developers, contractors, and the public, as well as good public relations practices. The ideal candidate will possess strong communication skills, work independently and exercise independent judgement, initiative, and understanding in interpreting rules and regulations in unique meeting situations. Applicants must be willing to work some non-standard hours. The work sometimes involves physical exertion such as long periods of standing; walking over rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces; recurring bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching or similar activities; recurring lifting moderately heavy items such as record boxes. At times in this work, specific, but common, physical characteristics and abilities such as above-average agility and dexterity are needed.
