Salary Information

Compensation plans are based on a multi-step progression system. The pay range reflects the entry level and maximum salary potential in the assigned pay grade. A starting salary may be negotiated and will be commensurate with education, training and experience in alignment with pay administration policies and Montgomery Personnel Board Rules & Regulations.

Nature of Work

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to supervise and manage a library branch with a staff of employees. Due to the small number of employees typically assigned to a branch, branch heads may perform tasks typically assigned to their subordinate(s); however, they are ultimately responsible for the management of the branch. The work responsibilities of this classification include :

  • Supervising two or more employees;
  • Managing library branch;
  • Completing special projects and assignments;
  • Serving patrons and the public;
  • Performing circulation duties;
  • Creating and implementing programs and events;
  • Managing a collection;
  • Performing a variety of miscellaneous duties related to library management and administration.

The Librarian III classification differs from the Librarian II classification in that the IIIs function as a branch or department manager. The department head differs from the branch head in that department heads are versed in a specialty area and branch heads provide more generalized services. The Librarian III classification is typically supervised by the Assistant Director for City-County Libraries.

Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree in librarianship from a program accredited by the American Library Association and two (2) years of professional level library experience in a public library and six (6) months of experience leading other employees. NOTE : Qualifying education, training and experience that provide the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the job will be considered.

Kind of Examination

Applications are being accepted to fill one (1) vacancy and any other vacancies that may occur during the life of the register. The current vacancy is with the Montgomery City County Public Library. Applicants will be screened and qualified based upon education and experience as shown on the application and supplemental questionnaire. For this reason, applicants are urged to fill in the application form and supplemental questionnaire completely, providing detailed information concerning the kinds of jobs they have held, the dates they held them, where and exactly what their duties were. If qualified applications are received that exceed the number of vacancies, a selection device will be used to rank the qualified applicants on the eligible register and tied scores will not be broken. If qualified applications are received that are less than the number of vacancies, they will be considered equally qualified and placed on the register in alphabetical order.
