Job Description
JOB SUMMARY
Under the direction of the Recreation Supervisor, the employee is responsible for being on-site with children, program planning, and program implementation. The Explorers Supervisor also directly supervises program staff and volunteers. The employee should continually seek ways to expand the program’s outreach and impact throughout the community.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Design daily activity lesson plans and agendas for child development.
- Assist in the development of operational policies and procedures for school-age children's summer programs.
- Addist with the implementation of rules, regulations, and policies.
- Mediate conflicts between students and staff.
- Lead participants in physical activities, crafts, and educational lessons.
- Fill out incident reports and other paperwork as needed.
- Ensure activities and lessons are properly equipped for the activity assigned.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Establish staff schedules and effectively consider staff to child ratios.
- Lead staff trainings and meetings prior to and through the duration of the program.
- Communicate with the community and Recreation Supervisor or Superintendent regularly.
- Develop programs/events to market, support and complement the Explorers Summer Day Camp program.
- Communicate with the USDA meal program coordinator to provide accurate meal counts daily.

- Knowledge of children, sports, and recreational activities.
- Knowledge of Washington Administrative Codes related to school-aged childcare.
- Ability to exercise good judgment, understanding, and emotional stability.

- Ability to evaluate and understand the needs of children participating in program.
- Ability to enforce regulations in a fair, impartial and polite manner.

- Ability to communicate with supervisor for program and personal needs.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
The Recreation Supervisor assigns work in terms of somewhat general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with instructions and established procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES
Guidelines include Moses Lake Parks and Recreation, and Larson Recreation Center policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK
The position consists of working with youth and parents to oversee Day Camp operations.
CONTACTS
Contacts are typically with youth campers, parents, and recreation staff.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Indoor and outdoor environment.
- Working varied hours, including mornings or evening shifts and some weekends.
- Be able to be active with children and provide clear instructions.
- Climbing ladders.
- Standing for extended periods of time.
- Lifting heavy objects weighing fifty (50) pounds.
- Reaching overhead and above shoulders.
- Kneeling or crouching.
- Hearing and speaking to communicate information.
- Reading and writing to communicate information.
- Seeing to monitor activities.

- Ability to swim or wade in water.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY
Responsible for the direction of site staff and operations in the absence of the Recreation Supervisor.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Two (2) years of management experience in a related field is highly desirable.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- College credits in school-aged-children-related courses are highly desirable.
- Current First Aid/CPR certifications are required, or willing to obtain within the first week of hire.
- Must be 21 years of age or older.
- Food handler’s card, or willing to obtain within the first week of hire.
- All applicants must be able to successfully pass a background check process which includes reference checks and criminal history checks, or other.
