What are the responsibilities and job description for the 911 Emergency Dispatcher position at City of Mount Airy?
The City of Mount Airy is currently seeking dedicated, hardworking individuals to join our Telecommunications department as a Telecommunications Officer. An employee in this class performs the activities of the telecommunications section including taking complaints, dispatching Police and Fire Unit, operation of CAD system, in-house and DCI computers and preparation and distribution of various police reports. Work involves frequent contact with the general public and is performed under the supervision of the Police Captain and immediate supervision by Senior Telecommunicator. Work is evaluated through observation, review of reports, and performance notes provided by immediate supervisor. The work involves frequent contact with the general public. Telecommunication officers with the police department work a 28 day rotation between days and nights. Telecommunications officers work day and night shifts that rotate on a regular cycle. The salary for this position is $35,000.
Requirements include: Applicants must be a U.S. citizen and at least 18 years of age.Qualified applicants should be detail oriented, able to function well under high pressure situations and maintain a professional and calm demeanor. Applicants must be able to multi-task and have above average computer and clerical skills, have excellent written and oral communication skills.
Applicants must have the ability to communicate clearly and be able to deal with the public politely under stressful conditions; ability to exercise good judgment, calmness, and ability to recognize potentially dangerous or hazardous situations based on verbal descriptions. Applicants that are bilingual with prior experience in dispatching and clerical background are preferred. Graduation from high school or the equivalent of a high school diploma is required. Individuals must undergo an extensive criminal background investigation, drug screen and physical. Position is full-time with benefits.
