The City of Murphy Public Works Department seeks to add a Public Works Supervisor to its’ dynamic team! As our Public Works Supervisor, you will assist in the supervision and management of maintenance crews that operate various street construction equipment and tools to construct, repair, and maintain the City’s streets, traffic, drainage systems, and other street operations.
Schedule Commitment
This is a full-time non-exempt position that works a standard schedule of 7:30am-3:30pm and may need to respond to an on-call or emergency callback as needed.
Pay Plan
This opportunity is non-exempt and budgeted on Pay Grade #33.
The pay plan range below is shown to represent opportunities for growth and development within this opportunity. We are seeking to hire between the Min to Mid-range of the pay grade shown dependent upon qualifications.

- Ensures daily tasks assigned by the Superintendent are carried out by the crew
- Assists Public Works Superintendent in planning, scheduling and implementing construction, maintenance and operation activities to provide quality water, wastewater, street and drainage services
- Performs required labor involved in construction and maintenance projects, including pavement cutting, ditch digging, manhole and line cleaning, main and pipe repair, laying and backfilling
- Services water supply, sewer lift stations and other pumps
- Responds to complaints regarding water leaks, pressure loss or no water; sewer leaks, sewer backups, odors, etc.
- Operates, repairs, and maintains various equipment and vehicles (such as tractors, mowers, front end loader and backhoe, skid steer loader, rollers, and other vehicles, etc.)
- Performs handwork on hot asphalt as it is placed
- Loads and unloads trucks
- Patches pot holes
- Cuts brush, mows high grass, weeds, and cleans around street intersections
- Performs routine and daily maintenance tasks on assigned equipment to include fluid levels check, lubrication point check, tire pressure check, cleaning filters and screens, cleaning of wind shields, and general washing
- Inspects equipment to insure road worthiness by checking the operation and presence of all lights, horns, braking systems, wipers, road hazard equipment, securing loads and other items required by the Department of Transportation before allowing equipment onto public roads
- Adheres to stand-by schedule as assigned for emergency repairs at night and weekends
- Adheres to departmental, personnel, safety rules and regulations, as listed in the Personnel and Administrative Regulations Manual
- Identifies hazards and liability exposure and immediately reports to Superintendent
- Assists in training Maintenance Worker I's and II's to increase their skills in the safety, maintenance, construction and repair of water, wastewater and storm drainage systems. Assists in locating gas, telephone, power, cable television, water, and sewer lines from the appropriate sources prior to excavation
- Evaluate employee performance and assists in selecting new employees as needed
- Directs inquiries and concerns of the general public to the Superintendent
- High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED)
- Five (5) years’ experience performing street maintenance, repair or construction work experience and light to heavy construction equipment operation
- Five (5) years’ of water distribution and/or wastewater collection maintenance experience
- Current Class “C” Water Distribution License as issued by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ)
- Current Wastewater Collection II License as issued by TCEQ
- Valid Texas Class B Commercial Driver's License with a Tankers Endorsement
- Driving record must be in compliance with City policy
