The City of Murrieta is accepting applications for the Library Page (Part-Time) position to fill two (2) current vacancies at the Murrieta Library. The ideal candidate will be committed to providing exceptional customer service. The eligibility list established may be used to fill the current and/or upcoming vacancies within this classification for up to one (1) year.

DEFINITION

Under direct supervision, performs a variety of routine library work. This entry-level position is primarily responsible for shelving library materials, either in alphabetical or numerical order, assisting other library staff in maintaining the Library's collection of materials and equipment, and performing related duties as required.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS

Library procedures are learned on the job. This class is distinguished from Library Assistant I by performing the more routine tasks focusing on the physical maintenance of the library's collection, furnishings, and environment during operating hours. Incumbents may have limited or no related work experience.

Essential Functions

  • Sort and shelve books, media, periodicals, and other library materials according to the Dewey Decimal Classification
  • Shift materials on shelves as necessary to properly shelve items
  • Read the materials shelved for location accuracy and re-shelve misplaced items
  • Retrieve materials from the book drops, fan the materials for damages and perform general/primary sorting tasks
  • Check printer/copier machines to maintain paper supplies
  • Retrieve daily deliveries of newspapers and prepares them for the periodical display while rotating previous day's newspapers into the back issues stacks
  • Continuously keep the library in a neat and orderly fashion; picking up books and other materials left on the tables and counters; pushing in chairs, picking up loose trash, cleaning whiteboards in the study rooms, light dusting, etc
  • Assist with special and routine library programs: setting up, cleaning up, monitoring crowds, displaying decorations, handing out incentives, etc
  • Operate standard office equipment including, but not limited to; computers, copiers, phones, bin sortation units, self/express check machines, Ellison Dye machines, etc
  • May assist library patrons with routine directional questions and/or referring patrons to other Library staff members as needed
  • Assist staff with general opening and closing procedures
  • May work with volunteers as a guide in any of the duties above
  • Checks library materials using an automated system; assists patrons with the check-out process and use of automated materials handling terminals; manually checks materials out as needed
  • Assesses problems to determine if materials need mending, to be put into lost and found, or to be returned to another library

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Qualifications

Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

  • Completion of sophomore year in High School
  • No experience required. Previous experience in a library setting is desirable

Additional Requirements

  • Must be at least sixteen (16) years of age
  • Must be able to work nights and weekends

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Continuous walking; lifting objects weighing up to 10 lbs from below the waist to above shoulder level and transporting such weight in distances from 1 yard up to 500 yards. Use fine finger dexterity and light pressure to operate keyboards and telephones, and fan book pages; pinch/grasp to hold books, DVDs, CDs, magazines, audio books and materials in other formats and hold/manipulate writing tools. Frequently stand, sit, bend, and stoop; squat, reach above and at shoulder level; push/pull, twist at the waist. Flex the neck upward and downward, side-to-side turning of the neck; lift objects weighing 11 - 15 Ibs from waist to waist level, with or without assistance, and transport such weight in distances from 1 foot to up to 10 feet. Infrequent, crawling, balancing above ground on a secure stool, lifting objects weighing 51- 75 lbs from below waist to shoulder level with assistance, and transporting such weight in distances from 1 - 5 feet; strongly grasp or lift equipment, furniture or boxes of books.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

Exposure to heat and humidity when working outdoors at special events; exposure to noise of crowds and large groups of people. Work is performed primarily indoors in an enclosed library facility; Exposure to temperature variations within the building and from indoors to outdoors; possible mechanical hazards of equipment (audio/visual, computer, book carts, etc.); exposure to dust and mites emanating from large quantities of books and paper stored in one facility. Work is performed in no more than an 80-hour bi-weekly increments, unless pre-approved, with scheduled and unscheduled breaks. Occasional overtime may be required for adequate staffing of the library facility with weekends, evenings and holidays scheduled. Work setting is formal/professional, team-oriented, with both routine and variable tasks. Work pace is variable, but frequently fast-paced and high-pressure.

Examinations for the position may consist of any combination of appraisal interview, performance test and writing exercise to evaluate the applicant's skill, training, and experience for the position. Successful applicants will be placed on an eligibility list. The City may also merge lists. The selected candidate(s) must successfully complete pre-employment clearances which include a pre-hire physical and Live Scan background investigation.

N/A - THIS IS A PART-TIME, NON-BENEFITED POSITION.

The City does not belong to the Social Security system. Therefore, enrollment in the PARSARS 457 retirement program is mandatory and requires a contribution of 7.5% of base earnings. The City contributes 1.3% and the employee contributes 6.2% of base earnings; contributions are made each pay period,on a pre-tax basis.

Pursuant to the Healthy Workplaces, Healthy Families Act of 2014 (AB 1522), eligible part-time employees will accrue 24 hours or three (3) days of paid sick leave each fiscal year, for a maximum accrual of 48 hours. This paid sick leave is available to the employee on the 90th day of employment.

Part-Time shifts for all temporary/part-time employees must not exceed 999hours on a fiscal year basis (July 1 through June 30).

There are no rights to employment and employment may end with or without cause or advance notice.
