POLICE OFFICER RECRUIT
JOB SUMMARY
This is a non-exempt, entry level position which requires completion of the Field Training Program as the initial assignment. General job functions consist of both routine and complex law enforcement responsibilities which include: reporting and documentation, enforcement, preliminary investigation, preservation of safety, peace and security, and other tasks as assigned. Work is performed under the direct supervision of a training officer. The recruit has few independent decision-making responsibilities.
Salary Range: $50,040.00 (Recruit, entry level, no experience) - $58,535.00 (Officer, Step 5). Lateral based pay is offered on a point rating scale for the following: Education from 30 hours of college up to a Master’s Degree; Year for year experience up to 5 years at an agency serving at least 10,000 in population including UCO, OU and OSU campuses; and various Law Enforcement Certifications to include SFST, BID, FTO, CIT, ARIDE, LEDT Instructor, DT Instructor, Firearms Instructor, DRE, Accident Reconstructionist, Intoxilyzer and OBNDD Narcotics School. Point Rating Scale for Lateral based pay: 0-1 pts – Step 1; 2-3 pts – Step 2; 4-5 pts – Step 3; 6-8 pts – Step 4; 9 pts – Step 5.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
REPORTING AND DOCUMENTATION
The incumbent performs tasks which require the production of formal narrative reports. Reports are verbal and written for the purpose of documenting information, events and evidence. Some examples are:
1. Completes written or computer-generated complaints in order to legally charge an offender in a court of competent jurisdiction.
2. Writes narrative reports on tasks performed.
3. Verbally testifies in court.
ENFORCEMENT OF LOCAL STATE AND FEDERAL LAWS
The incumbent must be capable of performing a broad range of law enforcement duties. These duties are defined by and related to: laws and ordinance, departmental policies and procedures, and recognized methods and techniques of law enforcement. Some examples are:
1. Writes citations to offenders of municipal ordinances.
2. Arrests violators of state and city laws.
3. Acts as crime deterrent by patrolling city in police vehicle.
PRELIMINARY INVESTIGATION
The incumbent performs diverse tasks which involve the recognition, collection and analysis of evidence and information. These tasks require the use of initiative and creativity. Some examples are:
1. Interviews/interrogates victims, suspects, and witnesses.
2. Inspects buildings to locate unusual activity, criminal activity, or "suspicious" people.
PRESERVATION OF SAFETY, PEACE, AND SECURITY
The officer assists the community in preventing opportunities for crime and provides aid to those in distress. Some examples are:
1. Assists stranded motorists and maintains traffic flow.
2. Provides information to assist in problem solving.
3. Administers first aid to prevent further injury or death.
JOB REQUIREMENTS

3. Ability to make decisions, adapt and learn.
4. Ability to maintain high ethics and interact with others.
EVALUATION CRITERIA
DIFFICULTY
This job consists of non-repetitive work situations. Complex decisions requiring a high degree of accuracy are made based on concrete and abstract variables under the guidance of the training officer; however, situations may occur requiring independent action. This is particularly evident in life-or-death situations which occur, and which may result in the taking of another person's life. The officer is held accountable for the end result of all decisions made.
INTERPERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS
The worker routinely confers with individuals and groups of all socioeconomic levels to provide information, direct movement, and resolve problems of mutual interest.
WORKING CONDITIONS
The incumbent is subject to physical and emotional stress on a regular basis. Most jobs in this classification require shift work under all environmental conditions. The employee routinely encounters health and safety hazards, with occasional encounters that threaten bodily harm or the possibility of loss of life. The incumbent may be subject to emergency call outs and occasionally extended tours of duty. The officer must be able to withstand obnoxious odors and view heinous crime scenes.
PHYSICAL EFFORT
The incumbent must be able to defend self and others in physical combat. Officer must be capable of lifting or moving people and heavy objects. The individual may have to run for various distances, climb, jump, or otherwise surmount obstacles.
SUPERVISION
The employee receives specific instructions and work assignments by the Field Training Officer (FTO). Work is subject to daily review by the FTO through visual monitoring of job performance and review of reports. The officer will also receive periodic performance evaluations by the immediate supervisor.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
No felony record/21 years or older/high school diploma or G.E.D., college preferred. Must be eligible for and receive police certification from the State of Oklahoma. Must successfully complete the department’s Field Training Program and the specified probationary program. Must possess a valid Oklahoma Driver's license at time of employment.
