Vactor Operator


JOB SUMMARY


The purpose of this classification is to perform unskilled to semi-skilled work to clean and maintain sewer and storm water lines and collection systems. 


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Cleans and maintains sewer and storm water collection systems; performs confined space entries in manholes and wet wells; performs smoke and dye testing as needed; inspects and evaluates condition of systems; diagnoses problems; cleans manholes and lines.
  • ; Cleans and washes equipment and tools; performs preventive maintenance and minor repairs on tools, equipment and vehicles; and notifies supervisor of needed equipment replacements and repairs. 


  • Assists with conducting pre-trip inspections; including checking all fluids, gauges, lighting, mirrors, tires, body damage, seats and seatbelts, cleanliness of vehicle, etc.; fuels trucks; loads and secures materials on trucks; travels to job sites; and conducts post-trip inspections. 


  • Adheres to established safety procedures; monitors work environment and use of safety equipment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals; flags and directs traffic and places markers, signs and cones around project/work site to ensure safety of crew and the traveling public; wears protective gear.


  • Receives and responds to work orders and service requests; completes and updates information in computer database; maintains related documentation.


  • Uses a variety of hand and power tools and equipment to perform assigned duties, including easement machine, push camera, root and tap cutter, two-way radio, confined space equipment, line locating unit, manhole pick, pry bar, sledgehammer, line cleaning nozzles, crescent and pipe wrench, probe rod, shovel, etc.


  • Communicates with supervisor, City employees, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems


  • Operates a personal computer, gas monitor, or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions, to include the use of word processing, spreadsheet, database, or other system software.


ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS

  • Once a Commercial Driver’s License with tanker endorsement is obtained, this position requires on-call responsibilities to respond to incidents outside of standard working hours.
  • Performs other related duties as required, requested and assigned.


Education and Experience:

High school diploma or GED; one (1) year of experience in sewer line maintenance. 


Licenses or Certifications:

Must possess a valid driver’s license and must obtain a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with tanker endorsement within six (6) months. Certification for confined space entry preferred.

  • Ability to utilize a wide variety of reference, descriptive, and/or advisory data and information.
  • Ability to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form.
  • Ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving evaluation of information against measurable or verifiable criteria.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The work is heavy work. The employee is constantly required to move objects applying up to 20 pounds of force; frequently required to apply 30 pounds of force to move objects; and occasionally required to exert up to 100 pounds of force to move objects. Additionally requires:balancing, climbing, crouching, feeling, grasping, handling, hearing voices and distinguishing among sounds, kneeling, lifting, manual dexterity, mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, stooping, expressing ideas by the spoken word and shouting to be heard above ambient noise, visual acuity in data/color/observations/operating equipment/inspect defects or measurements, and walking. 

WORK ENVIRONMENT


Work is performed outdoors where essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, unsafe structures, confined spaces, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, bright/dim lights, toxic agents, water hazards, disease, or rude/irate customers. Work is performed in an environment with heavy equipment and machinery that could result in bodily harm to co-workers or others
