The City of Napa boasts a stunning array of natural spaces, from lush parks and playgrounds to winding trails and sports fields. With over 890 acres of land under our care, including 55 parks, 26 miles of trails, and an urban forest teeming with 30,000 trees, we're dedicated to preserving and enhancing our Parks!

The ideal candidate is comfortable working with members of the public, able to work independently with minimal supervision, and willing to work nights, weekends, and holidays. This position has several opening and closing shift options depending on the needs of the department.

Note About Temporary & Part-Time Positions: Part-time positions are not to exceed 1,000 hours in a fiscal year (July 1 - June 30). Temporary and part-time employees are at-will and not covered by the Civil Service System. Some benefits for temporary employees include sick leave, temporary employee retirement plan, and 3.5% bilingual pay if applicable.

TYPICAL TASKS

  • Patrol assigned areas by vehicle or on foot to implement park rules, regulations, laws and ordinances governing activities within assigned parks, trails and open space areas.
  • Clean and supply restrooms, service trash cans as needed, pick up litter in park areas; open and close public access to parks and facilities; inspect public areas for safety hazards and sanitary conditions; advise parks staff of conditions requiring attention.
  • Ensure the safety of all visitors by implementing rules and regulations as well as identifying and resolving potential safety issues; issue verbal warnings.
  • May issue written citations to individuals to support the enforcement of the City municipal code and parking violations occurring on City Park lands.
  • Answer questions of visitors concerning park operations, wildlife, plant life, directions and historical data.
  • Provide emergency assistance for situations involving injury, illness, water or other causes; may assist with emergency response operations outside of established response areas.
  • Perform animal control duties such as contacting animal control for the trapping of stray dogs, rescue of injured animals, and the disposal of dead animals.
  • Build and lead interpretive nature programs. Lead guided hikes and engage in public speaking events for children and adults.
  • Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

Experience:
Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and training is qualifying.

Ability to: Perform physical activities, such as, but not limited to, lifting heavy items (up to 50 lbs. unassisted), bending, standing, climbing, or walking; Follow written and verbal instructions and work independently with little supervision; Work evenings, nights, holidays, and weekends.

Special Requirements: Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent education; Possession and continued maintenance of a Valid California Class "C" Driver's License and a good driving record is required; Possession of, or ability to acquire within six months of employment, Red Cross Certificates in First Aid & CPR.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in the operation, management, protection, and interpretation of a park, forest, private reserve, public recreational, or historical area.
  • Ability to communicate in both English and Spanish.
  • Advanced education in park management, forestry, or natural resources.
  • Prior experience providing service to members of the public.
  • Prior experience enforcing rules and regulations.
