What are the responsibilities and job description for the Code Enforcement Officer position at City of Naperville, IL?
The City of Naperville is seeking a Code Enforcement Officer to investigate violations of the Municipal Code ranging from building, zoning, and property maintenance to public safety issues. This role supports efforts to maintain community standards by working with residents and business owners to achieve code compliance.
- Investigates complaints of alleged violations of the Municipal Code related to building, zoning, property maintenance and public safety matters, from initial complaint to resolution.
- Prepares and maintains documentation of all communications to internal and external clients regarding compliance matters, and updates records in a timely manner.
- Works with commercial and residential property owners to bring properties into compliance.
- Prepares and issues citations to property owners in accordance with Municipal Code.
- Initiates legal action in response to Code violations; and works with Legal Department staff to prosecute cases.
- Provides court testimony for Code violation cases.
- Negotiates fines and plea bargains with Code violators.
- Conducts follow-up investigations to ensure compliance within an established timeframe.
- Conducts safety element inspections for special events; and ensures proper posting of necessary warning notices.
- Performs annual inspections of licensed liquor establishments for appropriate licensing; and verifies that surrounding areas meet zoning and building requirements.
- Facilitates and presents public education events regarding various components of Municipal Code requirements, enforcement and compliance.
- Provides Code interpretation and support to Municipal Boards and Commissions, other City Departments and the public, as requested.
- Identifies inconsistencies within the Municipal Code and recommends updates and revisions to ensure alignment with current City policies.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Required:
- Associate’s Degree plus three to five years of related experience, or
- Bachelor’s Degree plus one year of related experience
- Valid State of Illinois Driver’s License
