BASIC FUNCTION

To maintain an atmosphere of peacefulness and respect in cemeteries, municipalities employ cemetery operations personnel to manage these final resting places. These professionals oversee the day-to-day maintenance of cemeteries under their care and take care of the cemetery facilities.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES


  1. *Prepares graves and maintains cemetery grounds: Locates grave site according to section, lot, and plot numbers, and marks area to be excavated.
  2. Removes sod from gravesite, using shovel.
  3. Digs grave to specified depth, using pick and shovel or backhoe.
  4. Places concrete slabs on bottom and around grave to line it.
  5. Mixes and pours concrete to construct foundation for grave marker, using premixed concrete, wheelbarrow, and hand tools.
  6. Positions casket-lowering device on grave, covers dirt pile and sod with artificial grass carpet, erects canopy, and arranges folding chairs to prepare site for burial service.
  7. Builds wooden forms for concrete slabs, using hammer, saw, and nails.
  8. Sets grave marker in concrete on gravesite, using shovel and trowel.
  9. Mows grass, using hand or power mower.
  10. Prunes shrubs, trims trees, and plants flowers and shrubs on grave, using hand tools.
  11. Removes leaves and other debris from graves, using leaf blowers and weed eaters.
  12. May drive vehicles, such as backhoe, trucks, and tractors.
  13. May repair and maintain tools and equipment, using hand tools and power tools and applying mechanical knowledge.
  14. May open and close mausoleum vaults, using hand tools.
  15. *Follows directions per project specifications.
  16. *Possesses and retains proper license to operate vehicle.
  17. *Remains available for all emergency situations.
  18. *Checks equipment before use.
  19. *Determines when equipment needs to be used.
  20. *Operates equipment according to safety guidelines.
  21. *Performs other duties as assigned.

MENTAL AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  1. Ability to work as a team member.
  2. Display professional appearance, warm demeanor and positive attitude.
  3. Be a motivated self-starter.
  4. Work independently and to be accurate, efficient and organized.
  5. Manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  6. Work under pressure with time constraints in a changing environment.
  7. Stand, walk, sit, reach with hands and arms, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl occasionally.
  8. Lift and/or move up to 75 pounds frequently.
  9. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT AND CONDITIONS

  1. This position requires working in both an internal and external environment.
  2. Significant amount of time will be spent working outdoors and in inclimate weather (within reason and safety) to include: hot, humid, cold, rain, ice and snow.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

  1. Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in written form.
  2. A pleasant, friendly, and outgoing demeanor.
  3. Willingness to take on additional tasks as assigned.
  4. Familiar with basic OSHA stands and safety practices.
  5. Must have an unexpired Motor Vehicle's License and a good driving record.
  6. Experience in grounds keeping preferred.

  3. Law equipment.
