Arborist
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
This position manages the urban forestry throughout the City, and manages the vegetation around the utility lines.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develops a tree and vegetation program in conjunction with the Horticulturist. Works independently to manage approved Vegetation programs through tree removal, trimming, planting and installation, inspections and making recommendations on tree species.
- Follows the direction of the Horticulturist on the tree work schedule. Emergencies and safety risks take precedence over the scheduled tree work.
- Performs tree inventories and evaluations, tree pruning, tree removal, tree cabling and bracing, and tree moving.
- Trains other staff in the Parks Department on trimming, removal, and use of equipment; provides employees with resources to gain additional knowledge.
- Operates aerial lift, bucket truck, chipper, backhoe, all types of chain saws, ropes, spikes, and other tree related equipment.
- Identifies potential problems in the City such as tree disease infestation, potential threat of insect invasion as well as replacement of the urban green space. Assists City Horticulturist to develop treatment plans.
- Executes precautionary measures for approaching storms and responds to after effects of a storm.
- Works with Horticulturist to answer questions that City officials and residents have pertaining to trees.
- Attends approved training and seminars on tree care.
- Assists with investigations on tree incidents, and accidents, and completes reports for the City's liability insurance provider.
- Maintains records of tree work completed throughout the City.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Associate’s Degree or specialized courses/training equivalent to satisfactory completion of two years of college in Arboriculture or a closely related field required.
- Six years of experience as an Arborist required.
- Ability to use a personal computer, check emails, write and generate reports in Microsoft and Google Suite required.
CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES REQUIRED
- Arborist
- Line Clearance Arborist
- Roadside Tree Expert
- Urban Forestry license
- CDL Class B valid in the State of Maryland
- Electrical Hazard Awareness (EHAP)
- ANSI Z133 and ANZI A-300
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.
- Performs medium to heavy work that involves walking, standing, stooping, lifting, digging, pushing and raising objects and also involves exerting between 20 to 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis and 50 to 100 pounds of force on an occasional basis.
UNAVOIDABLE HAZARDS (Work Environment):
- Unavoidable hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken.
- Unavoidable hazards include working at heights, dealing with sharp equipment such as chainsaws, axes, and pruning saws; potential risk of falling limbs and objects, as well as potential exposure to electrical hazards and environmental conditions. Involves routine and frequent exposure to toxic/caustic chemicals; explosives; violence.
