Description
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Perform various skilled work such as preventative maintenance, improvements, and
repairs to mechanical equipment, passenger vehicles, trucks, loaders, compressors,
pumps, and other heavy equipment.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Perform preventative maintenance and repair on various heavy equipment such as backhoe, trash packers, dump trucks, loaders, chippers, trailers, leaf boxes, etc.
- Participate in the repairs of A/C, heating systems, brake systems, and hydraulic systems for all City vehicles.
- Perform routine engine maintenance, such as lubricating parts and replacing spark plugs.
- Conduct routine maintenance such as oil changes, diagnostic checks, and test drives all City vehicles.
- Conduct repairs and diagnostic checks on heavy equipment with airbrake systems.
- Replaces, mounts, and balances tires; conducts front end wheel alignments and front end work such as replacement of struts, spindles, ball joints, and tire rods.
- Provides welding work on all equipment.
- Inform and discuss equipment issues, and maintenance plans with the Lead Mechanic.
- Maintain accurate records of inspections, test results, work performed, parts ordered and used.
- Perform two-man quality assurance inspections prior to returning a vehicle to personnel.
- Maintains accurate records and reports of department’s work assignments.
- Practices safe and efficient work ethics.
- Performs related work as assigned.
Qualifications
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Requires High School graduation or GED equivalent supplemented by specialized courses/training equivalent to completion of one year of college in vehicle mechanics or closely related field.
Requires six years of experience in vehicle mechanics or closely related experience.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of
limb and body movement.
- Lifting: Frequently lift objects under 10 lbs., regularly lift objects between 10–50 lbs., and occasionally lift objects over 50 lbs.
- Manual dexterity: Must be able to use hand tools with accuracy and steadiness.
- Standing and walking: Will spend a lot of time standing or walking, or on uneven objects.
- Bending, stretching, and twisting: Will often bend, stretch, and twist while working in confined spaces.
- Climbing: May need to climb on ladders or crawl under vehicles.
- Exposure to the elements: Will work in a variety of conditions, including heat, cold, adverse weather, and around moving vehicles. May also be exposed to grease, oils, solvents, fumes, and chemicals.
- Concentration: Must be able to concentrate, especially when operating heavy
- machinery or working with moving parts.
UNAVOIDABLE HAZARDS (Work Environment)
Unavoidable hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken.
Involves routine and frequent exposure to toxic/caustic chemicals; moving machinery.
SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS & LICENSES
- Commercial Driver’s License with an air brake endorsement, valid in the State of Maryland, required.
- ASE and MVAC certifications, preferred.
- MIG Welder or Stick Welder experience, preferred.
