Aquatics Specialist

Aquatics Specialists are responsible for maintaining a safe and enjoyable environment for staff and participants. Aquatics Specialists are tasked with staff supervision in the absence of the Assistant Aquatics Director and Aquatics Director.

Reports to and works under the supervision of the Aquatics Director and Assistant Aquatics Director.

Examples of Work (Illustrative):

· Recruit, train and recommend lifeguards and swim instructors to management.

· Act as facility supervisor, while Aquatics Director and Assistant Aquatics Director are not at facility.

· Provide for the safety of pool patrons while in the water and on the deck by maintaining effective scanning of the assigned zone. Reposition if necessary for the best view of the zone.

· Monitor activity in the pool/waterfront and respond quickly and efficiently to emergency situations following established procedures.

· Work as part of a team and model professional behavior always.

· Provide excellent customer service to visitors of Green Harbor Beach or any New London Recreation Department aquatic program.

· Report any safety, customer service, maintenance issues in a timely manner to management (Aquatics Director and Aquatics Recreation Leader)

· Remember – safety is the number one concern.

· Be in rotation when required and perform regular lifeguard scanning duties.

· Communicate clearly and politely to patrons when responding to questions or providing direction.

· Educate patrons about the rules and reasons for them.

· Carry out facility rules and eliminate hazards to prevent accidents.

· Current certifications to administer First Aid, CPR and AED.

· Communicate clearly with other staff when assistance or equipment is needed.

· Direct concerns and complaints to the Aquatics and Recreation Leader, Aquatics Director or Supervisor on duty.

· Teach or fill in for any level of the Recreation Departments Swimming Lessons.

· Considerable knowledge of and ability to correctly and effectively use swim-related teaching instruments such as kickboards, buoys, bar bells, etc.

· Working knowledge of and skill in the instructional techniques related to teaching water awareness and advancing the swim skills of children.

· Ability to effectively communicate with a variety of people, both single and in groups, in an instructional setting.

· Ability to competently supervise subordinate employees, providing friendly, positive leadership.

· Ability to maintain strict confidentiality as needed and in accordance with federal and state law, particularly in the occasional handling of highly confidential medical information.

· Ability to maintain composure and to handle emergency situations competently.

· Ability to establish effective working relationships with superiors, subordinates, and program participants and to deal with issues using sound judgment, courtesy and tact.

Ability to meet the physical field demands of the position including working in water for long periods of time, both indoors and outdoors and to wear appropriate clothing (staff shirt and one-piece bathing suit) during work hours.

· Working knowledge of the principles and practices of providing for the safety of swimmers and other patrons in a waterfront or pool area.

· Working knowledge of and skill in the use of life saving equipment.

· Skill in verbal communications and in understanding and explaining directions and rules.

Ability to work with employees and participants of varying ages and backgrounds, utilizing sound judgment and mature decision making.

Ability to maintain strict confidentiality as needed and in accordance with federal and state law, particularly in understanding and disseminating highly confidential medical information.

Ability to report to work in a timely, dependable manner, to work responsibly without supervision and to work weekends as required by the position.

Ability to maintain composure and to make effective, quick decisions in responding to emergency situations.

Ability to establish effective working relationships with superiors, subordinates, and program participants and to deal with issues using sound judgment, courtesy and tact.

Ability to wear appropriate swim wear at all times while on site.

Ability to meet the physical field demands of the position including working indoors and/or outdoors, spending long periods of time in the sun, moderate walking, sitting

Must be 18 or older. Certifications in American Red Cross Lifeguarding, CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Water Safety Instructor or have at minimum 4 years of lifeguarding experience with a current Certifications in American Red Cross Lifeguarding and CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers. Some experience in a leadership role with programs involving a diverse population that includes children and teenagers preferred.

Pay: $18.88 - $20.52 per hour
