JOB SUMMARY

Works under the direction of the Chief Building Official in the review of plans and inspection of building construction to ensure compliance with plan specifications and all applicable state and local ordinances and regulations.

The pay scale reflects the minimum as a Standard Inspector or the maximum as a Combination Inspector. The position & pay will depend on qualifications.

In order to qualify as a Combination Inspector, MUST hold a State Inspector's License and one of the categories as described in the job description.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

• Reviews construction plans and specifications for compliance with applicable codes.
• Performs field inspections related to building code.
• Assists with processing permits, and providing general information as needed.
• Discusses building problems with builders, architects, contractors, engineers and others.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

MATERIAL AND EQUIPMENT USED

Vehicle, computer, calculator, general office equipment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSREQUIRED

Education and Experience:

High School diploma or GED; and

Licenses and Certifications:

Valid Florida Driver’s License

Holds State Inspectors License in any one of the following categories: Building, Electrical, Plumbing, Mechanical, One and Two Family or; demonstrate the work experience and ability to acquire a State Provisional Inspectors License in any one of the above listed categories within 180 days of hire and must obtain license within one (1) year of hire.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

• Principles and practices of construction.
• Related codes and land development regulations.
• Applicable state, federal and local laws, rules and regulations. Computer applications related to the work.
• Skill In:
• Using tact, discretion, initiative and independent judgment within established guidelines.
• Organizing work, setting priorities, meeting critical deadlines and following up assignments under the direction of the Chief Building Official.
• Good mathematical skills.
• Communicating clearly and effectively orally and in writing.

Mental and Physical Abilities To:

Read and understand construction plans and specifications.

Understand and carry out oral and written instructions, giving close attention to detail.

Apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations.

Read and interpret documents such as construction codes.

Deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. Maintain effective working relationships with professionals and the public.

While performing the essential functions of this job the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, climb or balance, talk or hear, and lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

Working Conditions:

While performing the essential functions of this position the employee is frequently exposed to work near moving mechanical parts, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electric shock, and outdoor weather conditions.

Pay: $26.43 - $28.13 per hour
