GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES
Under general supervision, this position is responsible for assisting in coordinating and conducting
Fire Department community risk reduction programs. Reports to the Public Education Coordinator.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Prepares, implements and conducts specialized community risk reduction programs to Newport News
Public Schools students, private schools, after-school programs, senior centers, and civic and business
organizations.
Implements community risk reduction programs; researches and designs public information materials
and visual aids; prepares, presents, and maintains visual and audio aids; assists in the maintenance of
public education equipment.
Maintains public education supplies for fire stations; maintains statistical data on programs and
prepares reports pertaining to fire education activities; assists with public and department events and
programs to include Fire Prevention Week and other outreach events; attends various committee
meetings to include neighborhood watch, school PTA, and other civic groups and social organizations.
Performs other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE
- Education and Training – Thorough knowledge of educational techniques, methods, and
knowledge of the proper methods and techniques of researching, preparing and disseminating
fire safety information.
- Information Technology – Knowledge of computers with word processing, spreadsheet, and

- Customer Service- Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer service. This

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Requires a Bachelor’s Degree in education, public administration, liberal arts or a related field and 2
years of related experience in teaching or training, or an equivalent combination of education and
experience.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Requires an acceptable general background check to include a local and state criminal history check
and sex offender registry check.
A valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Requires the ability to exert moderate effort, though not constant physical effort.
- Some combination of lifting, carrying, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, pushing and/or
