The City of Norfolk, Maritime Center – Nauticus is seeking to hire a Maritime Center Specialist II - Education. The Maritime Center Specialist performs interactive educational history and science programs including tabletop activities, sharing educational content in formal and informal settings. This position works with a team to deliver world-class guest services to patrons by maintaining quality guest experiences presenting educational material in a fun and engaging way.
Nauticus is a maritime discovery center located along the waterfront in downtown, Norfolk offering a unique form of experiential learning for all ages. Through interactive exhibits and STEM to STERN programming, Nauticus uses the museum, Battleship Wisconsin, sailing center, and Schooner Virginia to tell the story of the maritime environment, industry, and the military.
Essential Functions
Essential functions include but are not limited to:
Presents science and history programs to diverse audiences including but not limited to special youth groups, family groups, school groups, scouts, teachers, and the public including the physical set up for programs, events, and activities.- Performs interactive educational programs including tours, science-oriented tabletop activities, demonstrations, workshops, special events, outreaches, and exhibits.
- Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with other employees, officials, and all members of the general public.
- Maintains quality guest experience along with safety in the assigned work area.
- Assist with guest relations in a STEM environment. Able to provide positive guest experience through engagement. Ability to present educational material in a fun and engaging way.
- Ability to stand for extended periods of time, lift from ground to above shoulder, climb, bend, stoop, sit, push, pull, and perform tasks requiring manual dexterity.
- Other duties as assigned.
Education/Experience
Work requires knowledge necessary to understand basic operational, technical, or office processes. Level of knowledge equivalent to four years of high school or equivalency.
Preferred candidate will possess some college coursework in science, history, museum studies, or related field.
Previous experience working in a similar guest focused, entertainment, or education environment preferred.

Work Location: 1 Waterside Drive, Norfolk, VA 23510
Work Hours: Monday-Sunday 10:00 AM – 5:00PM, 20 hours per week max. Position requires some holiday and weekend shifts. Some evening work may be required based upon scheduled events.
