Job Description
This job classification has been designated as a safety sensitive job classification in accordance with the Oklahoma Medical Marijuana and Patient Protection Act, 63 O.S., § 427.1 et seq., (OSCN 2019), effective August 29, 2019. This means employees in this job classification can be subject to disciplinary action up to and including termination if they test positive for marijuana components or metabolites, even if they possess a medical marijuana license.
Education and Experience: Four-year college or technical school degree in Architecture, Construction Science or related field. Five years of experience in Building Construction, Building Design or equivalent experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
Licenses and Certification: Must possess ICC Building Plans Examiner Certification. Must be able to obtain the ICC Residential Plans Examiner Certification within two years of employment. Must be able to obtain the ICC Accessibility Inspector/Plans Examiner Certification within three years of employment. Must possess a valid Oklahoma Driver’s License and satisfactory motor vehicle record.
Knowledge: Applicable City codes and regulations as they relate to building construction. Methods, materials, and techniques used in building construction. Operation of computers and Microsoft Office software. Be able to work with permitting software.
Skills: Effective oral and written communications. Exercising good technical judgment and interpersonal skills in making decisions. Interpreting and applying City codes and ordinances. Interpersonal skills to explain established procedures, codes and ordinances in a positive manner. Establishing and maintaining good working relationships with general public and co-workers. Dealing with the public firmly, tactfully and impartially in order to achieve desired goal. Reading and interpreting engineering and architectural plans and specifications. Exercising good technical judgment in the plan review situation. Marking up plans and details.
Duties and Responsibilities: Essential Functions: Reviews and approves commercial and residential plans for repairs, alterations, or new construction for compliance with City adopted codes and ordinances. Assists in coordination of permit review by several different departments. Assists divisional staff in the issuance of permits when found to be in compliance with City codes. Assists customers by actively listening, asking questions, explaining technical code issues and offering a workable solution to problems. Assists City Building Inspectors, architects, engineers, builders, and skilled trades personnel by interpreting codes and assisting in resolving problems. Explains and interprets building, electrical, plumbing, fuel, gas, heat and air conditioning and refrigeration ordinances, codes and regulations to builders, contractors, inspectors and others as required. Communicates with builders, contractors, and general public explaining established procedures, codes and ordinances. Performs other related work as required.
Working Conditions: Work is performed in a normal office environment, although occasional site visits are necessary with exposure to dirt, outdoor temperatures, construction equipment noise, and dust.
Mental and Physical Abilities: Ability to maintain regular, predictable and punctual attendance. Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail when reading reports, reviewing plans or responding to citizen inquiries

Salary : $35 - $41
